GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team (3-4) got a shutout six-inning start from
Adam Hinojosa and swung the bats well in a 15-1 win over York (1-5) Sunday afternoon to take the three-game series.
There was just one hit on the board through 2 ½ innings Sunday, but that changed in a big way with the home team batting in the bottom of the third.
Israel Gandara and
Genesis Nunez notched back-to-back doubles, and another two runs came in on a pair of errors and a wild single from
Juan Perez.
Second baseman Alejandro Hernanadez made a highlight reel catch to keep the Panthers off the board in the fourth inning, and the teams eventually headed to the home half of the fifth with the Aggies still ahead, 3-0.
OPSU then broke the game open, striking for five extra-base hits (six hits total) and six runs in the frame. Hernandez, Perez,
David Garcia and Grandara all doubled in the inning, while
Lucas De Jong and
Neugyen Culmer drove in runs with a triple and single respectively, helping increase the lead to 9-0.
Hinojosa (1-0) closed his day after six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight for the freshman's first collegiate victory.
Panhandle State tacked on another six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, aided by two doubles and a homer. Perez kickstarted the inning with a double, De Jong recorded a two-run double, and Nunez capped a remarkable series with a three-run shot to left field.
The Panthers got on the board in the seventh, but reliever
Derek Borino limited the damage to just one run as the Aggies sealed the victory.
Nunez, Perez and De Jong each had monstrous days of multiple hits and multiple RBIs. They were joined by Gandara and Culmer with multi-hit games.
What's up next: Panhandle State stays at home for its final series prior to conference play when it faces Randall University beginning Friday, Feb. 13.
