Big Day at the Plate Not Enough at NWOSU

ALVA, Okla. — A season-high three home runs, 14 hits and 11 runs were not enough Tuesday afternoon on the road as the Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team (9-15, 2-10 SAC) fell 21-11 against NCAA Division II opponent, Northwestern Oklahoma State (14-15, 6-9 GAC).

The Aggies took a first-inning 3-0 lead thanks to a three-run homer from Philip Matos, and the score held until the bottom of the second when the Ranger lineup came to life.

Walks and singles led to the home team surging ahead 4-3 through two frames, and the Rangers piled on with seven more in the third, aided by a pair of errors and a three-run shot.

Trailing 11-3, OPSU climbed right back as Matos, Danny Martinez and Jim Paredes all singled before an out was recorded in the top of the fourth. Then, with two outs, Lucas De Jong homered to the scoreboard in left-center field, and a new rally was started. David Garcia singled in a pair of Aggies before coming in to score on a passed ball, making it 11-9.

NWOSU's offense continued its surge to stay in front, 13-9, until Kobe Morgan drove in Michael Perry to bring Panhandle State within 13-10 in the fifth frame.

A two-run homer from the Rangers immediately increased their lead back to five after five innings of play, and it wasn't until Paredes' solo home run in the seventh that the Aggies scored their 11th run.

With the hosts ahead 17-11 heading to the bottom of the eighth, they took advantage of extra outs and two doubles to end the game early via the run rule, 21-11.

Morgan's three base knocks led OPSU on the day, though he was joined by Julian Payan, Matos, De Jong and Paredes with multi-hit games. Everyone in the lineup recorded at least one hit except for Andrew Valencia, who drew three walks and scored once to keep the offense churning.

What's up next: The Aggies return to Carroll Gribble Field on Friday and Saturday for a three-game series versus Central Christian College (12-13, 7-5 SAC).
