PLAINVIEW, Texas. — Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball (10-21, 3-15 SAC) was unable to keep a six-run lead in the third game of the series against Wayland Baptist University (26-11, 12-6 SAC) in a seven-inning, 19-8 loss.
The Aggies came out swinging in the finale, scoring the first three runs of the game. A wild pitch by the Pioneers helped OPSU get going as
Jackson Somerville came across to score.
Devin Lopez then singled to left field, allowing
Julian Payan and
Juan Perez to get their first runs of the game and bring the score to 3-0 entering the bottom of the first inning.
WBU got two runs back on a two-out, two-run single in the opening frame, but the Aggies' 3-2 lead held into the third inning. That's when Payan singled,
David Garcia hit a double and OPSU plated a pair on an error by Wayland's third baseman to go in front, 5-2.
One inning later, Lopez doubled to right-center and
Neugyen Culmer smacked a two-bagger as part of a three-run frame that gave Panhandle State an 8-2 edge.
Unfortunately, the Aggies were unable to keep the momentum going through the rest of the game as they allowed the Pioneers to score 17 runs over the next three innings. The game ended with a score of 19-8 after the top of the seventh when the Aggies were unable to cut into the deficit.
Payan and Garcia led the lineup with three-hit games. Lopez and Culmer joined them with multi-hit days, combining to drive in all four RBIs the visitors racked up in the contest.
What's up next: OPSU heads to Woodward, Oklahoma, Tuesday for a mid-week doubleheader against Hesston College (8-19), with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon.
