GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team (8-12, 1-8 SAC) fell 16-4 at home in a tough series finale versus Oklahoma City (9-14, 6-3 SAC) Saturday afternoon.
A combined 3-for-4 day with two home runs from the Aggie catchers,
Zoilo Pimentel and
David Garcia, accounted for all of OPSU's runs in the lopsided loss.
OCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring all three on a misplayed fly ball with two outs. After being held scoreless in the second, the Stars tallied nine runs (six earned) in the third frame and never looked back, taking advantage of free passes, an error and timely hits to grab a 12-0 edge.
The Aggies countered with Pimentel's two-run shot down the left field line in the bottom of the third, but the game got out of hand again in the fourth with the Stars going up, 16-2.
Garcia's two-run homer – the ninth of his OPSU career – came in the fifth inning, but neither team would get much going over the final two frames of the contest.
Panhandle State's pitching staff recorded 11 strikeouts on the day, including four apiece from starter
Adam Hinojosa and reliever
Braden Germundson. Germundson pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, and
Bryan Montano closed the day's work with a clean seventh inning featuring two strikeouts.
What's up next: OPSU is back on the road March 13-14 at College of the Ozarks (14-9, 5-4), where it will look to get on track in the SAC.
