Strong Offensive Production Spoiled by Late-Innings Demise Versus SNU

WOODWARD, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team (11-27, 3-18 SAC) took on NCAA Division II opponent Southern Nazarene (8-30, 1-23 GAC) Tuesday at Fuller Bullpark, where it got good run production but fell in both games of the doubleheader by matching 14-7 scores.

Genesis Nunez shined at the plate, going a combined 4-for-7 with a triple, homer and seven RBIs to fuel the offense. He and the Aggie lineup compiled 16 hits, drew 13 walks and collected 14 RBIs across the doubleheader.

Game 1: The Crimson Storm tallied a two-run homer in the first inning before adding two runs apiece in the second and third frames. The Aggies tried to keep pace, scoring on a pair of RBI singles off the bat of Juan Perez in both the first and second innings. OPSU had chances to grab an early lead but left five runners on base between the opening two frames.

Panhandle State took advantage of its base runners in the bottom of the third, when Genesis Nunez tied the game at 6-6 with a two-out, three-run triple to right-center. Israel Gandara had notched an RBI single earlier in the frame, and Alejandro Hernandez set up Nunez' at-bat with a two-out walk.

Southern Nazarene went back in front, 7-6, on its fourth sacrifice fly of the day in the fourth inning. Thereafter, however, Braden Germundson shut the Crimson Storm down with 3.2 innings of one-hit, one-walk shutout ball to keep the Aggies in the game.

OPSU's lineup also went cold until the sixth, when Devin Lopez drove in Nunez with a sacrifice fly to tie things at 7-all. The contest headed to extras, and SNU's lineup exploded following a leadoff walk issued by Germundson that prompted a pitching change.

Germundson finished his day with those 3.2 innings pitched, giving up just the one earned run in the eighth. At the plate, Gandara tied for a game-high three hits, and Hernandez tied for a game-high three runs scored.

Game 2: Southern Nazarene took advantage of an extra out to score two unearned runs in the first inning, but Panhandle State starting pitcher Andrew Valencia put up zeroes over the next two frames. The Aggies tied it up in the third inning, plating two on Nunez' two-run single through the left side.

In the fourth inning, another error cost OPSU as the Crimson Storm went ahead, 5-2, following a sacrifice fly and two-out, two-run homer. Danny Martinez got one run back with a solo homer – the first of his Aggie career – in the fourth to trim the deficit to 5-3.

SNU increased its lead with a three-run fifth, but the Aggies responded in kind in the bottom of the inning by getting a two-run home run from Nunez that plated Neugyen Culmer. Then, a one-out rally saw Zoilo Pimentel draw a walk, Lucas De Jong single and Martinez drive in another run with a sharp base hit, making it 8-6, Crimson Storm.

The teams traded runs in the sixth, and Southern Nazarene broke the game open in the seventh to seal its sweep.

Valencia went four innings in the nightcap, striking out three and surrendering no earned runs.

What's up next: Panhandle State gears up for its final home series of the season, now set for Thursday and Friday versus No. 18 Mid-America Christian. Thursday's doubleheader begins at 12 noon, and Friday's single game will start with a Senior Day ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
