Box Score Plainview, Texas—Panhandle State put up three solid sets against Wayland Baptist in Tuesday's Sooner Athletic Conference contest, but the Pioneers pulled out a 3-0 victory to send the Aggies home empty-handed.
The Aggies got off to a good start in game one, matching the Pioneers point-for-point through the 8-8 mark. WBU pulled into a six-point lead 17-11, but Panhandle battled back to 22-22 before falling 25-23 in the end.
Trailing throughout the entire second set, the Aggies managed a few three-point runs to keep things close. The Pioneers maintained a consistent edge and finished with a 25-19 win. Looking for a comeback in set three, the Aggies brought five score-ties early in the game but were unable to pull ahead, taking a 25-22 loss.
Panhandle averaged a .155 hitting percentage for the match, while Wayland averaged .200 over three sets. Sophomore
Kendra Butler led her team with ten kills followed by freshman Quiara Pointdexter who had nine kills for the Aggies. Wayland's Megan Scharratt held the game-high in kills with 12. Setters
Julia Ibarra and
Gabrielle Cruz shared duties offering 15 and 13 assists respectively; Elisabeth Piroli led the Pioneers in assists with 33.
Defensively, the Aggies totaled five blocks contributed by Butler, Pointdexter,
Essence Kays and
Barbara Forman. Wayland won behind the line with ten service aces to Panhandle's five, each school committing nine errors on serves.
The Aggies now own a 4-8 season record with a 2-3 record in the SAC. The team enjoys a brief break from play this weekend before re-entering conference play on their home court next week. Panhandle State volleyball meets with Saint Gregory's on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m., and then hosts another conference match on Saturday, Sept. 30 against Southwestern Christian at Noon.
