CANYON, Texas – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's basketball team faced off versus the NCAA Division II No. 5-ranked team - West Texas State University – in an exhibition contest and managed to hang within striking distance for the first half. However, a second-half stampede by the highly-ranked Buffalos did in the Aggies, 124-70.
Panhandle State trailed WTAMU at the intermission, 49-35. In the first 13 minutes of the second half, the Buffs had booked more points (50) than it had in the entire first stanza.
While the Aggies shot a creditable 42 percent (27-64) from the field, OPSU struggled from three-point range, going 0-for-8 as a group. Panhandle did itself no favors by committing 27 turnovers in the game, which were converted to 41 points by WTAMU.
In the first half, the Aggies were within six points, 22-16. The Buffs went on an 8-0 run after the 12:00 media timeout and maintained a 14-point halftime advantage of OPSU.
In all, three Aggies finished the day with double-figure scoring. Sophomore transfer
Terrance Gibbons led the trio with 14 points, going 6-of-15 from the field. Gibbons also had seven rebounds in his 31 minutes on the floor.
Junior transfer
Maurice Waters went 5-of-12 shooting on his way to a 13-point game. Waters gabbed an Aggie high of nine rebounds, all on the defensive end.
Quentin Fankhouser, also a sophomore transfer and Goodwell, Okla. native, contributed 10 points. Fankhouser was 3-of-4 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. He hauled in five rebounds, as well.
Jalen Williams booked nine points, with
DK Sumo IV adding seven.
Auston Chatman and
Daniel Holyfield had six points, apiece.
Tristen Womble and
Brett Williams scored four and one point, to round OPSU's scoring.
Sumo topped the Aggies with four assists. Chatman had three steals and six rebounds on his ledger.
Panhandle State will play a second-consecutive exhibition on Saturday (5.p.m.) at Lubbock Christian University, also an NCAA II member.
