WAXAHACHIE, Texas— The Aggies fell in two close contests to the Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) Lions in Waxahachie, including a Game 2 that extended into an extra inning after the Aggies battled back to score five runs in the top of the seventh.
Panhandle took an early lead in Game 1 as
Luis Rodriguez and
Jared Mayeda came across the plate in the top of the first, but SAGU answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning against left-hander Joey Goetze, and another in the bottom of the third to tie the score at one run a piece. The bats got hot for the Aggies in the fourth as they plated four runs off RBI's from
JJ Vaught,
Bradley Ruiz and Mayeda, but the Lions kept clawing back in the bottom of the frame, adding another two runs with the Aggies still in the lead (6-4).
The bottom of the fifth played to the Lions' advantage, as they plated two runs early, and
Nicholas Virdo came to the mound for the Aggies. The Lions would send another two runners home before the end of the inning to take over the lead (8-6) and widened the gap with a final run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win over the Aggies (9-7).
Both teams tallied 11 hits on the game with the Aggies striking out six between Goetze and Virdo, to the Lions' two.
Panhandle struggled offensively in Game 2 against the SAGU's Martinez, who posted a shut out through four while the Lions accumulated five runs in the same span against the Aggies'
Yesiel Valdez. The Aggies got on the board in the top of the fifth, as
Jaylon Burnett and Ruiz reached first and second on consecutive walks before Burnett was advanced on a sac fly by
Payton Rhodes and came in to score on a groundout from Vaught (5-1). The sixth remained scoreless for both teams but a comeback was waiting for the Aggies in the seventh as they started off the inning with a double from
Kasey Leatherwood. Brandon Gonzales stepped in to pinch run and was advanced home by a sac fly from Burnett and an RBI single from Ruiz. Ruiz would cross the plate on consecutive singles from Rhodes and Vaught. Another single from Mayeda scored Rhodes and Vaught would come home on a wild throw from the Lions' pitcher to tie the game (5-5) and force the eighth inning. After a resilient effort from the Aggies, the Lions would walk off with back-to-back doubles on two outs and take the game 6-5.
The Aggies are now 13-11 on the season and .500 in conference at 4-4. Game three of the series will take place tomorrow (Mar. 16/11:30 a.m.) as the Aggies will look to stop the sweep with a victory.
