ALVA, Okla.— The Aggies (14-12) were rocked by a mid-week loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State as they fell to the Rangers (14-11) 14-4 on Wednesday at Glass Family Field.
Panhandle got behind early as starter
Rancys Nunez took some heat on the mound as he allowed three Ranger runs and a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first. Lefthander
Garrison Armstrong was brought in with bases loaded and one out and sent the next two Rangers back to the dugout with a K and a fly-out. Catching a break in the top of the second, a sac-fly from
Juan Sanchez sent
Kasey Leatherwood across the plate to get the Aggies on the board, 4-1, but the bottom of the frame took an ugly turn for Panhandle as NWOSU plated seven runs off five hits to extend the advantage, 11-1.
Blake Tucker would exit the bullpen for the Aggies heading into the third.
A solo home run by Leathwood in the top of the fourth sparked some hope for the Aggies, but the Rangers tacked on another run of their own in the bottom of the inning off a long double down the left field line to take the score, 12-2.
In the fifth,
Jorge Acevedo came to the mound in his second outing of the year and allowed another two runs from the Rangers, expanding their lead, 14-2. The bottom of the frame yielded a third run for the Aggies as a wild pitch from the Rangers allowed
Luis Dermas to come across the plate. The final Aggie pitching change would bring in
Charlie Marini in the sixth and he sent three consecutive Rangers away on a strikeout and two fly-outs. Panhandle would need two runs to stay alive in the top of the seventh, but they would earn just one as a single from
Gerson Padilla sent Tony Frye home and the Aggies' score to 14-4 to close out the game.
The Aggie bats were not far behind, tallying eight hits to the Rangers' eleven in the non-conference loss.
The Aggies will return home for a weekend three-game series against Central Christian (Kan.) over Mar. 23 (12 p.m.) and 24 (12 p.m.-DH). The last time these two teams met earned a series sweep for the Aggies as they took all three games for victories against the Tigers, and their Game 2 marked history for the red and blue as they scored the highest number of runs in a single game -22- in OPSU baseball history.
Live stats will be available on opsuaggies.com for all three games.
