PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's soccer displayed a stout defensive effort for most of its match versus perennial-power Wayland Baptist University, before eventually succumbing to a 1-0 decision at Hilliard Field. The Aggies fell to 2-2-1 overall, while the Pioneers improved to 3-1 on the year.
Despite being out-shot by a 20-4 margin, OPSU allowed just five attempts on-goal. Four were saved by Panhandle's freshman goalkeeper
Hugo Dutour.
The lone goal of the match came in the 78th minute. Off of a corner try, WBU's Alex Pike headed in the kick from Santiago Hernandez at 77:21 minutes elapsed.
The Aggies had three of their shot attempts in the final five minutes of the match as the team scrambled for the equalizer.
This was the second meeting between the two schools. In the first-ever meeting in 2019 – also in Plainview – WBU dominated Panhandle State, 6-0. OPSU was out-shot in that inaugural contest, 34-3.
OPSU will next be in action on Friday, October 23 when it travels to Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Kick off in Waxahachie, Texas is slated for 3 p.m., following the women's bout.
