Aggies land record 8 SAC Scholar Teams

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.- Oklahoma Panhandle State University Athletics continued to set academic milestones in 2019-20, as a record eight OPSU teams were named as Sooner Athletic Conference Scholar Teams, it was announced by the league office. League teams with a combined 3.0 grade-point average in conference-sponsored sports earned the SAC Scholar-Team honors, presented by Barnes & Noble College.
 
The eight Aggies team recognitions matched the previous record number of awards, also achieved in 2017-18. OPSU was fifth among SAC institutions in total team accolades. Overall, the SAC also amassed a record 80 teams earning the award.
 
"These eight teams have shown exemplary work in the classroom this past year," OPSU Director of Athletics Meghan Mulcahy said. "I am proud of them for being representatives of true student-athletes and happy that they are being recognized for their efforts."
 
Panhandle State's Softball team headed the academic list with a 3.60 grade point average for the year. The Aggies were one of three teams which ranked second among its peers for GPA in a sport.
 
OPSU Baseball was also the number two GPA in its sport, with a 3.24. In one of the only times it is OK to be "above par," Aggie Men's Golf also ranked second in the SAC at 3.28.
 
Women's Cross Country had the second-highest grade point average among Aggie teams – and ranked third in the SAC – with a 3.43. OPSU Women's Basketball – 3.36 GPA - was sixth among a strong field that had eight SAC teams finish above a 3.20.
 
Women's Golf collected a 3.25 GPA, fourth in the SAC. Men's Soccer posted a 3.11 grade point average in its inaugural season in 2019-20, fifth-best in the league. Volleyball rounded out the eight Aggie award winners with a 3.02 for the year.
