McPHERSON, Kan. – Senior
Cassia McCaskill had another big offensive effort to lead the Oklahoma Panhandle State University women's basketball team to a 69-66 Sooner Athletic Conference road win at Central Christian College. The Aggies (2-5, 2-5 SAC) never trailed in dispatching the Lady Tigers.
OPSU built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and led by as many as 14 points in the fourth. But the Aggies lead was a precarious single digits the bulk of the close contest.
With three seconds left on the clock in the fourth period and OPSU up 69-65, the Lady Tigers made just one of three free throws that could have tightened matters.
But McCaskill's huge effort helped keep Panhandle in control. McCaskill had a game-high 28 points, hitting 7-of-22 from the field, 5-of-13 from three-point range and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. She also pulled down six rebounds.
Guard
Tateum Jones chipped in a nice all-around effort. Jones tallied 10 points – making good on 4-of-6 field goals - and corralled eight rebounds. She also had a game-high seven assists.
Senior guard
Naomi Rodriguez added nine points to the OPSU coffers, with
Myra McCaskill contributing seven points and a game-leading 10 rebounds.
Morgan Williamson booked six points, four rebounds and had a pair of blocked shots.
Jo Quintero scored five points. Two points each from
Alie Parkhurst and
Laura Moya Demures rounded out the Panhandle scoring.
OPSU held a 39-38 edge in rebounding as a team. Both teams had similar numbers in the paint (26-24 in favor of CCC).
"Happy for our girls for getting this win on the road," OPSU Head Coach
Victor Esparza said. "Road wins are always tough to get. Our efforts were good again tonight. I'm proud of them for holding on and closing out the game at the end."
Panhandle State will look for a second-straight win on Thursday (Feb. 4) at home versus Texas Wesleyan University. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at Anchor D Arena.
