GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State University baseball split its Monday doubleheader versus the University of the Southwest. The Aggies (2-8) won the opener, 4-3, and dropped the second game, 12-0, to the Mustangs (1-1).
OPSU plated an unearned run in the first, only to have USW tie it in the top of the second. For the first five innings, it was a pitcher's duel between the Mustangs' AJ Cordova and OPSU's
Josiah Roundtree. Roundtree allowed three hits and three earned runs over 5.1 innings of work. He struck out nine and walked two.
Panhandle found itself trailing, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth. With one out,
Chris Galvan drew a walk. Then, with a 1-0 count,
Lane Field drilled a two-run homer to center field that knotted the game at 3-3.
OPSU reliever
Austin Jacobs set down the Mustangs in order in the top of the seventh, paving the way for the OPSU win on a walk-off walk. With one out and the bases full of Aggies,
Jose Santiago worked the base on balls from USW reliever Cade Contreras to force home the winning run, 4-3.
Jacobs (1-0) had 1.2 perfect innings of relief to earn his first victory for OPSU.
Leadoff man
Mekhi Edwards went 2-for-4 with a run scored to top the Panhandle batters. Field was 1-for-3 on the day.
Luis Dermas (1-2) had OPSU's other hit.
Game 2 was all USW, as the Aggies were out-hit by a 12-4 margin. The Mustangs scored one in the first, two in the second and added a four-spot in the third. OPSU hurler Zeke Dugan (1-2) absorbed the loss, going 4.1 innings, with eight hits and nine runs allowed.
Edwards and
Chris Schraer each had singles in the game.
Logan Patterson and
KJ Ward both slapped doubles to account for Panhandle's four hits.
The two teams will square off again with another twinbill on Tuesday, beginning at 11 a.m. at Aggie Field.
