GOODWELL, Okla. – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University baseball team lost both ends of a home, non-conference, doubleheader on Friday at Aggie Field. The Aggies (1-7) were outscored 17-4 and 13-5 in the twinbill versus the Coyotes (3-1), wrapping up the four-game series in Goodwell.
OPSU collected seven hits as a team (compared to 18 by KWU) in game one of the day. No Aggie had more than one hit, with
Mekhi Edwards (1-4),
Chris Galvan (1-3) and
Luis Dermas (1-3) each driving in a run.
Markus Bracey and
Jonathan Applebury each slapped a double for OPSU's only extra-base hits of the contest.
Chris Schraer was 0-1, but walked twice.
The Coyote batters got to Panhandle State starter
Joseph Goetze early and often, tallying big innings with six runs in the second and five in the fourth. Goetze was charged with 12 runs. He struck out seven and walked three in his 4.0 innings of work.
Bracey took the hill in game two and kept things close through four frames, with his team down 3-2. But in the fifth, KWU erupted for nine runs to blow open the game. Bracey's day included seven strikeouts and four walks.
But what may have been lacking on the mound, Bracey made up for at the plate. Bracey went 3-for-4 and slugged a pair of home runs. He drove in three runs and scored three, as well.
As a team, the Aggies had just two other hits: singles by Edwards and
Josh Jones.
The Aggies will look to regroup beginning next Friday (Feb. 12) with a non-conference series at Oklahoma Wesleyan University. OPSU and OWU will play a single game Friday at 12 p.m. in Bartlesville, followed by a Saturday (Feb. 14) doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
