Aggies Drop Overtime Thriller to John Brown

GOODWELL, Okla. - Panhandle State's women's basketball team would lose in an overtime nailbiter to the John Brown University Golden Eagles with a final score of 78-75. A back and forth game for the Golden Eagles and Aggies that saw four Aggies score in double-digits. An Aggie offense that would erase their early struggles in the contest to take the SACs #3 defense in overtime. An offense that saw explosive three-point production from seniors Cassia McCaskill and Vanessa Gonzalez

The Aggies saw offensive production from seven of the eight Aggies that saw the court. McCaskill would lead the way for the Aggies scoring 28 against the Golden Eagles and only being two rebounds and a single assist for her second double-double of the season and first triple-double. McCaskill would not be the only one just shy of a double-double as senior Tateum Jones would go for 10 points and 8 rebounds in the game.

The Aggies (5-14, 3-14 SAC) did not go down quietly against the Golden Eagles (134-12, 9-8 SAC). Looking to ride the hot hands of McCaskill and Bianca Camello to outpace the number 3 defense in the Sooner Athletic Conference. In their previous match-up, the Aggies struggled in their three-point shooting allowing the Golden Eagles to widen their lead with each possession. The Golden Eagles were also stronger on the boards allowing them more second-chance points in the game.

Cassia McCaskill was the center of attention in the game against the Golden Eagles. Her three-point success kept not only the team within reach of the Golden Eagles but also kept the Aggie fans in it as well. Knocking down eight of her seventeen attempts from beyond the arc. Finishing with team-high 28 points, while also totaling eight rebounds and nine assists.

Both the Aggies and Golden Eagles look to make a push as their conference slates come to an end and post-season comes into view. The Aggies are looking to play Cinderella as the Golden Eagles look to make a push for top-5 in the SAC.

The Aggies are known for the three-point attempts and the streaky threat they pose to opponents. The first two quarters showed how seriously the Golden Eagles took that threat. As they would force the Aggies to drive into the paint for contested mid-range jumpers and layups. However, when the opportunities presented themselves the Aggies did not shy away from the three-point shots. Totalling 17 total three-point attempts in the first two quarters. The Golden Eagles would combat the Aggies' three-point shooting by being more aggressive on the blocks down low. Allowing them to maintain a four-point lead into the half.

The Aggies would come out firing in the second half. Having shaken off the rust from a week off from games. Dropping eight three-pointers in the last two-quarters of regulation. McCaskill and Gonzalez would each lead the three-point onslaught for the Aggies, combining for seven of those eight. The Aggies capitalized on poor ball management by the Golden Eagles as they would tie up the game at 69 at the end of regulation.

Frantic overtime saw both teams' shooting percentages drop. The Aggies would shoot twenty-five percent and over time while the Golden Eagles shot twenty percent. Despite more efficient shooting the Aggies would be outrebounded leading to second-chance points for the Golden Eagles allowing them to take the lead and the win.

The Aggies would finish the game with a thirty-nine percent field goal percentage, forty-one percent three-point percentage, and thirty-three percent free throw percentage. A game in which the Aggies saw an early seven-point deficit as well as five ties.

The Aggies look to make up their postponed match against the Oklahoma City Stars Monday, February 7th at 6:00 PM.
