Aggies Fall in Home Opener

GOODWELL, Okla. Panhandle State hosted the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions for their first games of the season on Carroll Gribble Field. Dropping in both games of the twin billing. A chippy game for both of the teams as they both sit middle of the pack in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Head Coach Shawn Joy knows the importance of playing all the way through to the end. "We played hard but made a few more mistakes than they did. Those two games were very tight and both could've gone either way"

The series opener for the Aggies simply fell out of their grasps. Without stringing hits together and timely pitching the Lions overpowered the Aggies in extra innings. The Lions were just able to do what the Aggies were not as they would win game one 15-8.

The second game of the doubleheader was more pitcher dominated. Both starting pitchers would go all seven for their team. Strikeouts once again got the better of the Aggies as they attempted a late game comeback. The Aggies dropped the game 1-2.

Game 1

Finally able to open up Carroll Gribble Field for their first set of true home games, the Aggies looked to make a statement and turn their season around. However, they would be unable to maintain their lead in game one.

Senior RHP Austin Jacobs would designate the start for the Aggies. The Lions would chase Jacobs after only two innings of work. Scoring six earned runs off of eight total hits.

Braeden LeJarraga would be first out of the pen for the Aggies. Once again showing his ability to pitch effectively as he goes five innings. Allowing four earned runs on six hits. After surrendering a home run and a walk LeJarraga would make way for Zeke Dougan in the top of the eighth. The Lion bats would not slow down as they continued to pile on with seven runs in the inning.

The Aggie bats looked at ease as they finally made their way back to The Grib. The Lions would take an early lead in the first but the Aggies would answer right back. Senior Ethan Hunt singled into left field to score both Hunter Hutchinson and Luis Dermas. Shortstop Manrique Mora would bring Hunt around for another Aggie run in the inning.

Unable to hold the lead, the Aggies would watch the Lions answer with five runs of their own in the second. Jonathan Applebury and Ethan Hunt swung some momentum in the favor of the Aggies as they both launched two-run home runs and tied the game up for the Aggies. The Lions would once again answer the Aggie runs and then some. Unable to get any runners on base in the bottom of the eighth, Panhandle State would fall 15-8.

Game 2

The second game of the day consisted of sloppy base running for the Aggies that directly contributed to the final score. In a more pitcher dominated game baserunners would be needed to be conservative. Three separate Aggie runners would be picked off against the Lions.

Sophomore LHP Colton Anderson would throw a complete game in the second game of the day. Doing everything in his power to give his offense a chance to put some runs up on the board. Striking out eight lions and giving up on two runs in his outing.

The Aggies would do a near 180 for their second game of the day. Struggling to put the ball in play against the Lions' lefty and striking out eleven times. The Lions would get out to an early two to nothing lead in the third inning but the Aggies would be unable to muster any run production until the sixth. Once again Ethan Hunt had to be the spark plug for the Aggie offense. Hitting his second home run of the day to bring the Aggies within one.

Things would look promising for the Aggies as freshman Dylan Hughs would line a lead-off single into centerfield in the bottom of the seventh. The Lions would quickly sit down the Aggies after the lead-off hit. Hughs would be picked off at first only to be followed up with two Aggie strikeouts as they lose 1-2.

Prior to the start of the baseball game please come attend our unveiling of our softball field at 11:40.
