Aggies Stumble in Conference Opener

CHICKASHA, Okla. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State (4-12, 0-1 SAC) baseball team opened its conference slate against the Mid-America Christian Evangels (9-5, 1-0 SAC). Dropping game one of the series 0-13.

"We made too many mistakes early that put us in a hole", Head Coach Shawn Joy would comment.

A nearly non-existent day for the Aggie bats against the Evangels. Only managing three hits in the contest. The Aggie hitters racked up seventeen strikeouts against the Evangels. A struggle that has plagued the Aggies early on in the season.

Senior RHP Austin Jacobs (2-2) made his fifth start of the season. Coming into the game against the Evangels after throwing a complete game win over Kansas Wesleyan last week. Jacobs would not fare as well against the Coyotes as he would only make it through four innings of work. Due to errors and walks, Jacobs surrendered five runs, only two of those being earned.

Josiah Roundtree and Jostynn Mieses would come out of the pen for the Aggies to finish the game. Neither would have better luck than Jacobs against the Evangel offense. Both would give up four runs in their inning of work.

The Aggie offense, on the season, has struggled when they have been down early. Game one of the series would prove no different. The Evangles would march out to a five to nothing lead after the second inning. After that point, the Aggies only managed one more hit, a single from the first baseman Jonathan Applebury. Despite the flashes of confidence on the Aggies' season so far they have still been handcuffed by strikeouts.

Applebury attempted to be a lifeline for the Aggies, going two for three on the day with a double. However, he would not see much production from his teammates as the Aggies drop their conference opener.

Aggie baseball returns tomorrow Saturday, March 5th at 1 PM. Changing locations to Tuttle High School in Oklahoma City.
