Aggies Go Down in OKC

TUTTLE, Okla. - Panhandle State baseball continues their conference opener against the Mid-America Christian Evangels. Looking to salvage the series after dropping game one last night.

The Aggies looked to a new lineup in game two of the series against the Evangels. A move that would pay dividends for the Aggies as they saw a much more productive day at the plate. However, the Aggies would not be the only ones to have a good day at the plate. The Evangels would take advantage of the long ball to walk off the Aggies in the bottom of the seventh, 8-9.

Things would take a turn for the worse in game two for the Aggies. The Evangels would take advantage of a young Aggie pitching staff to score fourteen runs on fifteen hits. The offense found themselves too deep in whole to dig themselves out of early in the game. Unable to string together hits and generate some momentum as they drop the series finale 4-14.

On a tough road trip, Head Coach Shawn Joy would say, "We came up short but competed well and fought hard in the first game. The second game we put ourselves in too big a hole with mistakes."

Game 1

Aggie baseball looks to rebound after a somber game one outing. Needing to clean up their defensive chances and at-bats. Doing just that in game two of the series. Despite an improved performance in both of those categories, Aggie pitching would not be able to contain the home run threat of the Evangels late into the game.

LHP Colton Anderson would make his fifth start of the year. Getting knocked around early by the Evangels and was only able to make it through two and a third innings of work. Walks and wild pitches limited Anderson's options on the mound. Giving the Evangels more opportunities to get runners in scoring position.

Tate Nebhut would come in to relieve Anderson in the third inning. Coming out to a good start after getting some defensive help from center fielder Ethan Hunt. Hunt would record a double-play after throwing out an Evangel runner off a flyout. Not much more would go well for Nebhut as he finished the game for the Aggies. Giving up four home runs in the last four innings of the game. He would earn the loss for game two.

The Aggie offense came out with confidence after a not so confident game one. Putting up six runs in the first two innings. Capitalizing on walks and errors by the Evangels to bring runners across. Ethan Hunt and Jonathan Applebury generated as much momentum as they could for the Aggies. Combining for five of the seven Aggie hits and was directly responsible for all of the Aggies' runs.

A three-for-four outing from Applebury with two home runs and six RBIs compliments his two-for-three outing in game one. The senior catcher/first baseman looks to help the Aggies salvage a game in the series finale against the Evangels.

Game 2

Looking down the handle of a conference sweep the Aggies needed to buckle down for game three against the Evangels. A daunting task for the Aggies as they found themselves down twelve to nothing three innings into the game. Which seemed to deflate the Aggie dugout and hinder any chance of getting themselves back into the game.

RHP Joaquin Carlos (1-1) made his fourth appearance of the season and second start. Carlos would not last very long as the Evangels would score five runs off Carlos. After only working through a single inning Carlos would hand the ball off to Juan Javier.

Javier would be the first of three Aggies out of the bullpen against the Evangels. Javier would not have as much luck as Carlos. Only able to get one out after giving up four runs and two walks. Braeden Lejarraga would be the next man up for the Aggies. Toughing it out as the Evangels knocked him around for ten hits and five runs. Corbin Yandell would finish the last one and third innings for the Aggies and total three strikeouts.

Throughout the series, the Aggies have improved on managing their strikeouts. Timely hitting has now taken the forefront for the Aggies. The inability to string together multiple hits has limited their scoring capabilities so far this season. Manrique Mora would be the only Aggie to record a multi-hit game (2).

The Aggies have a short turnaround as they take the field against the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm Tuesday, March 8th at 2 PM in Woodward, Oklahoma.
