Aggies win second conference series

MCPHERSON, Ks. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team secured their second conference series win on the road against the Central Christian Tigers.

Head Coach Shawn Joy knows the importance of not only winning but winning on the road. "Winning a series is always the goal and we accomplished that. Going forward we need to play better baseball if we want to accomplish our goals."

After the weather threatened their series, the Aggies and Tigers hit the diamond for a late afternoon double-header. The series opener had all the characteristics of the games the Aggies struggled in. Sloppy play at the plate and on the field doomed the chances for an Aggie comeback in the 13-9 loss.

The last game of the double-header saw a more focused and detail-oriented Aggie team between the lines. Outhitting and outscoring themselves from game one. Three Aggies would have at least two hits in the game and eight of the nine starters would see the basepaths.

The series finale posed a challenge for the Aggies as the pitching rotation had been disrupted early on in the week. However, they would rise to the occasion and secure their second conference series victory in a seven-inning run-rule, 15-5.

Game 1

With the weather having pushed back the start time of the series opener for the Aggies against the Tigers, focus and attention to detail would be important. However, the Aggies would lack said focus as they dropped the series opener to the Tigers.

Sophomore LHP Colton Anderson would designate the start for the Aggies. Only able to make it through three innings of work before allowing the Aggie bullpen to take over. Anderson would surrender eight earned runs on eight hits in his three innings of work while only striking out three Tigers.

Braeden LeJarraga would be the first and last Aggie out of the pen in game one. Throwing the final three innings of the contest. Allowing an additional three earned runs on five hits.

Throughout the season strikeouts have been the bane of the Aggie offense. With more strikeouts (11) than hits (9) the Aggies backed themselves into a corner that would be hard to escape from. With the Tigers taking an early 10-4 lead the Aggies needed to string together good at-bats to get themselves back into the game.

Things seemed to take a turn for the better in the top of the fifth as right fielder Payton Brown would lead off the inning with a reach-on error. Jhonn Cabrera would follow up with a double to left-center to put runners on second and third. Hunter Hutchinson would get the Aggies on the board once again with an RBI single through the left side to score Brown and Cabrera. The Aggies would manage three more runs in the inning but would be unable to do much more in the following innings. Losing the series opener 13-9.

Game 2

With a second consecutive series loss staring them in the face the Aggies hit the field with a focus that was not seen in the first game of the day. With a strong pitching performance from the Aggie starter and simplified approaches from the Aggie hits, Panhandle State would bounce  back with an 11-2 win over the Tigers.

Senior RHP Josiah Roundtree would designate the start in game two. Pitching four and two-thirds innings on his way to his second win of the season. Roundtree would strike out two and allow two earned runs on two hits before exiting the contest. Joaquin Carlos would trade places with Roundtree for his seventh appearance of the season. Carlos closed out the game for the Aggies. Going two and a third innings without giving up a run.

Unlike in the series opener, the Aggies would find the scoreboard first. Ethan Hunt would be the first baserunner for the Aggies before Manrique Mora would launch a double to center field to score him. Dylan Hughes would bring another run around for the Aggies with a follow-up single.

Both teams' bats would quiet down for the next few innings. The Tigers would change that after a single and Aggie error in the bottom of the fourth to half the Aggie lead. Hunt would not take too kindly to the Tigers' efforts as he would once again lead the inning off with a walk. Mora would double to center to put runners on second and third. Hughs would load the bases after being hit by a pitch before Tucker Bond would hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hunt. The Aggies would continue to put pressure on the Tiger defense. Able to score two more runs in the inning.

The Tigers would answer with one run of their own in the bottom of the fifth. The Aggies would respond with six unanswered and win the game 11-2. Ethan Hunt, Manrique Mora, and Tucker Bond each record at least two hits against the Tigers. Hunt and Mora also scored at least three times.

Game 3

On the precipice of another series win the Aggies looked to duplicate their approach from game two. They would do so and more in the series finale. Scorching the Tigers for thirteen hits and fifteen runs.

Freshman Juan Javier would earn his first victory of the season in the series finale. Throwing three strong innings for the Aggies with three strikeouts. Efficiently pitching around base runners to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. Javier allowed three earned runs on six hits in his six innings of work.

Tate Nebhut would finish the game for the Aggies. Solidifying the run-rule for the Aggies in the bottom of the seventh. Nebhut would see the minimum with two strikeouts in his outing.

Game three would prove no different than game two. The Aggies would be the first to get on the board and they would maintain their lead for the rest of the game. Hunter Hutchinson would bring around the first Aggie runs of the game with a double in the top of the second. Luis Dermas would bring around another to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead.

Heading into the top of the fourth the Aggies held a slim 4-3 lead over the Tigers. With a new Tiger pitcher heading to the mound, the Aggies were set on doing damage early. Hutchinson would start the three-run inning with a single to left field. Dermas would follow with a double of his own. Hunt would launch a three-run home run to widen the Aggie lead. Unable to respond in full, the Tigers would be at the mercy of the Aggies in the final two innings of the contest. The Aggies would record three hits and eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings to assure their seven-inning run-rule victory.

A historic season so far for numerous Aggies. Ethan Hunt has tied the Panhandle State program record for single-season home runs (11) that was previously set in 11972 by Tom Ward. Red hot Manrique Mora is also inching closer to history as he has now reached safely in eighteen consecutive games. One game away from tying the record and two away from setting a new one.

Panhandle State baseball returns to Carroll Gribble Field next weekend April 8th at 12 PM for another conference series against the University of Science & Arts Drovers.
