Mora sets new program record against Drovers

GOODWELL, Okla. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team dropped the first two games of a three-game series against the #12 University of Science & Arts Drovers.

The Aggie pitching and hitting would not be up to the task against the twelfth-ranked Drovers team. The series opener saw too little offensive production for the Aggies while the Drovers got off the bus ready to hit.

The second game of the day proved to be just a continuation of game one. The Aggie bats would not be able to string many quality at-bats together to get on the scoreboard. While the Drovers couldn't stay off the bases.

Head Coach Shawn Joy saw how the lack of energy and attention to detail attributed to both losses. "We didn't play well today in any part of the game. We need more energy tomorrow".

Game 1

The Aggies looked to change their fortunes against the USAO Drovers in this year's series. However, the Aggies would stumble at the chance to get their first win against the Drovers due to a lifeless offense.

Sophomore LHP Colton Anderson would designate the start on the way to his fifth loss of the season. Anderson would be banged up for seven runs and ten hits in his three and a third innings of work.

The Aggies would reach into their bullpen for the last four innings of play. Using four different pitchers in that span. Tate Nebhut, Brandon Rodriguez, Jostynn Mieses, and Carl McKenzie would all make an appearance.

The Aggie bats would need to return to form as they head into the backside of their conference schedule. The Drovers would prove to be a tough test for the Aggies. The Drovers would spark a three-run inning in the first with multiple singles to take an early lead. With the Aggies unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning, USAO would score another two in the second.

Weak contact from Panhandle State kept them off the basepaths for the majority of the contest. Taking advantage of the said fact the Drovers would enter the sixth inning with a 10-0 lead. Freshman Dylan Hughs would bring some energy to the Aggies with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. A short-lived victory for the Aggies as USAO would answer with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh before shutting down Panhandle State in the bottom half to win, 12-2.

Game 2

The second game of the day would be highlighted by the long ball. The Drovers would launch four home runs in their 16-5 win to secure the series victory over the Aggies.

Senior RHP Zeke Dougan would notch his fourth start of the season. Being chased after only one and two-thirds innings by the Drovers. Allowing six earned runs off of five hits.

The Aggies would once again make ample use of their bullpen in game two. Braeden LeJarraga, Corbin Yandell, Joaquin Carlos, and Carl McKenzie would all come out of the pen for the Aggies. Combining for five and a third innings, seven hits, and eight runs.

Frustration seemed to be taking over the Aggie hitters after a disappointing game one. Game two would see similar results. Both teams would go down quietly in their first inning at the plate. However, the Drovers would explode for a ten-run top of the second. An inning that featured two Drover home runs.

The Aggies would be unable to answer in their half of the inning and be sat down in order. After a couple more quiet innings the Aggies would finally find the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth off a bases-loaded single from Hughs. Landon Finke would add another for the Aggies with a single to right field.

Once again, the Drovers would answer the Aggies' runs with some of their own. A five-run top of the fifth gave the Drovers a 16-3 lead heading into the seventh. Facing a 13-run deficit the Aggies headed into the bottom of the seventh with the top of their lineup heading to the plate. Jonathan Applebury would bring around two runs with a single after Hutchinson, Dermas, and Hunt loaded the bases. That would be all the Aggies could muster in the inning.

A record-setting pair of games for junior shortstop Manrique Mora as he has now set a new Panhandle State baseball record for consecutive games reaching base by reaching in 20 consecutive games. Previously set by Chris Schraer with nineteen consecutive games reaching base in 2021.

The Panhandle State and University of Science & Arts series finale is slated for Saturday, April 9th at 12 PM at Carroll Gribble Field.
