The prestigious Hall of Fame has opened its doors once again to honor outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the world of sports. This year, we proudly welcome Charley North, a legendary figure in the realm of football coaching, as he takes his rightful place among the greats. North's induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to his remarkable career and the impact he has made on the game.
North's journey to success began with his time at OPSU ( Formlly known as Panhandle Agriculture & Mechanical College or PAMC), where he showcased his skills both on the football field and on the baseball diamond. As a center for the Panhandle football team and a pitcher for the baseball team, he demonstrated his versatility and dedication to the sport. After his time at PAMC, he embarked on a coaching career that would leave a permanent mark on the game.
His coaching odyssey began at Wagoner High School, his alma mater, where he served as an assistant offensive line coach for two years. From there, he continued to hone his skills as an assistant at McAlester High School, achieving remarkable success and reaching the state semifinals twice in just three years. It was during these formative years that North's coaching prowess began to shine.
In 1985, North received an unexpected phone call from none other than legendary coach Barry Switzer of the University of Oklahoma. Coach Switzer invited North to join the Sooners' coaching staff, and North accepted without hesitation. For the next 18 years, he played an instrumental role in the team's success, coaching the offensive line and tight ends. Together, they achieved an impressive record of 16 bowl games, including eight Orange Bowl appearances. The pinnacle of North's time at Oklahoma University came in 1985 when they secured the National Championship with a resounding victory over Penn State.
North's coaching journey continued with successful stints at Arkansas, TCU, and Alabama, creating lasting memories at each stop. He then found himself at Texas A&M, where the team experienced a string of bowl game appearances, showcasing North's ability to inspire and lead his players to greatness.
After retiring from college coaching in 2007, North's passion for the game remained steadfast. He selflessly volunteered his time at Norman High and coached at Dibble High School, tirelessly working to rejuvenate the programs and instill a winning culture.
Throughout his illustrious career, Charley North's achievements garnered numerous accolades and honors. His high school football jersey, bearing the number 50, was retired at Wagoner High School in 2013, recognizing his exceptional contributions as an All-State High School Player. In the same year, he was inducted into his high school's Hall of Fame, a testament to his remarkable coaching successes.
In 2013, the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame recognized North's remarkable career, honoring him for his outstanding contributions to the sport. His dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to excellence earned him the prestigious Merv Johnson Coaches Integrity Award in 2011. With immense pride, he looks back on his coaching career, which saw him mentor 18 All-Americans and guide 22 players to the NFL.
When asked about his most cherished memories, North reflects on the bond he shared with his teammates at Panhandle, emphasizing the sense of brotherhood that football instills. He fondly recalls the camaraderie, relentless practice sessions, and lifelong friendships that were created during those formative years.
Now residing in Blanchard alongside his loving wife Sharon, who has been his steadfast companion throughout his incredible journey, North treasures the moments spent with family above all else. His wife Sharon retired after 30 years in the education system as a teacher in the Moore System. Charley's daughter Charla Uhles will be retiring from East Lake Elementary in Moore, OK this year. She also dedicated her life to education as a principal and teacher for 30 years. North adores his family and finds happiness in all of their accomplishments.
Charley North's induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the sport of football and the countless lives he has impacted along the way. His legacy will forever be etched in the halls of Panhandle State University football history, a shining example of what can be achieved through determination, passion, and the bonds of brotherhood.
