Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies women's basketball team faced off against the Southwestern Christian University Eagles in an intense matchup that saw a tale of two halves, ultimately resulting in a 64-50 loss for the Aggies.
In the first half, OPSU dominated the court, holding the Eagles to just 23 points. The Aggies showcased their offensive prowess, putting up 31 points while shooting an impressive 50% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. The Eagles struggled with turnovers, giving up the ball seven times in the initial two quarters. Southwestern Christian found success inside the paint, scoring 16 of their first-half points in that area.
The third quarter saw a shift in momentum as OPSU struggled on the defensive end, conceding 24 points to the Eagles. Southwestern Christian implemented a zone defense in the second half, causing the Aggies to face challenges in scoring, managing only 19 points throughout the half.
Despite the loss, OPSU had standout performances from Mariah Williams and Carolyn Olvera, both contributing 11 points each. Olvera was particularly effective from beyond the arc, going 3-4 on three-pointers, while Williams displayed efficiency with a 5-8 shooting from the field and three assists.
Sierra Tate made a significant impact off the bench for the Aggies, providing 8 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds.
Head Coach Maria Wiltzius expressed mixed emotions after the game, acknowledging the team's hard work in the first half but emphasizing the need to finish strong. Wiltzius commented, "We are playing hard; the first half was great, but first-half success does not matter if you can't finish the job."
