Aggies Volleyball Faces Tough Competition at Labor Day Classic in Omaha
Goodwell, OK – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University volleyball team displayed determination and resilience while competing in the Labor Day Classic tournament in Omaha, Nebraska. Despite facing strong opponents, the Aggies showed grit across four challenging matches.
The Aggies began their tournament facing off against Grand View University. Despite their best efforts, the Aggies could not overcome Grand View, losing in straight sets (11-25, 17-25, 15-25). Taylor Silva led the team with six kills, while Mia Sanchez provided 16 assists. Defensively, Teagan Mendoza-Werner anchored the back row with 16 digs. In their second match, the Aggies took on Northwest University from Washington. The team showed improvement, particularly in their blocking, but ultimately fell in three sets (13-25, 17-25, 18-25). Taylor Silva continued to lead with six kills, supported by strong performances from Taylore Alsaid and Ava Newby. Mendoza-Werner again led the team in digs with 14. The Aggies battled fiercely against Mt. Mercy University, pushing the match to four sets. After a challenging first set, the Aggies returned to take the second set 25-20. Despite their efforts, Mt. Mercy ultimately prevailed (11-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-25). Taylor Silva had a standout performance with 14 kills and 17 digs, while Cami Kenny and Ava Newby led the team at the net with six and five blocks, respectively. The Aggies took on Concordia University for their final game of the tournament. The team struggled to find their rhythm and fell in three sets (11-25, 14-25, 14-25). Ava Newby led with five kills, while Teagan Mendoza-Werner recorded 11 digs. Head Coach Ilani Myers said "We played some great teams and learned a lot. Our goal is to rebuild and to do that we have to go through the growing pains. We're going to continue to work and push forward."
