Goodwell, OK – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies kicked off their season with a commanding 31-13 victory over Wayland Baptist University last night at Anchor D Stadium. The home crowd was treated to a solid performance from the Aggies, who controlled the game from start to finish.
The Aggies struck first in the opening quarter when quarterback Brandon Stephens connected with wide receiver Jalen Partida for a 27-yard touchdown pass, putting OPSU on the board at the 8:16 mark. Christian Davis added the extra point, making it 7-0.
Wayland Baptist responded early in the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7-7. However, the Aggies quickly regained the lead. Stephens led a methodical drive, culminating in a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jamarian George, pushing the score to 14-7 after a successful kick by Carlos Vazquez.
The second half was all Aggies. Carlos Vazquez extended the lead to 17-7 with a 45-yard field goal early in the third quarter. Shortly after, Brandon Stephens broke free for a 37-yard touchdown run, followed by another successful kick from Vazquez, making it 24-7.
In the fourth quarter, the Aggies capped off their scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Stephens to Dillon Laurer, widening the gap to 31-7. Wayland Baptist added a late touchdown with a 3-yard pass, but the Aggies' defense held firm and the game ended with a 31-13 victory.
OPSU Head Coach Miller praised his team's effort in the season opener, saying, "It's good for us to win this first game, get our jitters out of the way, and build our confidence. We have a week to clean some stuff up and then head north and do it again."
