OKLAHOMA CITY — Despite a second 30-kill performance from
Elena Kagiali this season, the Oklahoma Panhandle State volleyball team (12-11, 10-6 SAC) saw its four-match winning streak end Saturday afternoon in a four-set defeat at Oklahoma City (12-10, 9-7), 23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 22-25.
Panhandle State boasted a strong attack throughout the match, hitting better than .200 in every set on its way to a .247 kill percentage with 53 kills. Those numbers were fueled by an other-worldly performance by Kagiali, who recorded her 30 kills on just 62 swings with three attack errors for a .435 hitting percentage.
Nine aces from the Stars helped the hosts to victory, as they got the points necessary late in sets to steal a split of the season series.
The SAC squads went back-and-forth in the opening frame, but OCU limited mistakes down the stretch to take a 1-0 match advantage.
OPSU evened things up 1-1 through two sets thanks to seven Kagiali kills and five from
Skyla Stark in the second game alone.
The Aggies raced out to an 8-1 advantage and still held a 21-17 lead late in set number three, but the Stars stormed back for the set victory.
Panhandle State again took an early lead but faltered late in the fourth frame, falling 3-1 in the match.
Mia Sanchez collected 43 assists and 10 digs for a double-double. Kagiali also had a double-double with 17 digs to pair with her 30 kills and four blocks.
Emma Coburn recorded a match-high five blocks, while
Winiffer Rodriguez put up a match-high 26 digs.
Taylore Alsaid also successfully dug 12 opposition attacks.
What's up next: OPSU returns to Anchor D Arena for its final home matches of the season beginning Friday versus Central Christian College (3-18, 1-14).
