OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Panhandle State women's soccer team (5-6-1, 2-4-1 SAC) fell 3-1 at RV Mid-America Christian (9-3-2, 4-1-2) late Monday afternoon in a match where every goal occurred in the second half.
The initial 45 minutes kept
AlaraLynn Gunderson busy, but the junior goalkeeper held firm with eight saves against the Evangels.
Tied 0-0, the hosts came out firing right away in the second half as the SAC's second-leading goal-scorer, Brae Baker, shot a nearly undefendable beauty into the right corner of the net to take a 1-0 lead. The Evangels' advantage was extended in the 57th minute on a penalty kick goal.
Still trailing 2-0 in the 81st minute, OPSU made things interesting when
Celeste Maldonado flipped the field on a free kick. The long play ahead was initially headed by
Kacie Garrett in the direction of
Emma Daskalov before deflecting to the feet of
Toriana Holt.
Holt kicked the ball in the right upper 90 for her fourth goal of the season, forcing MACU to sub its starters back into the match.
Moments later, the Evangels took advantage of an aggressive OPSU defense and put the game away with a leakout, one-on-one opportunity in front of the net that made the final score 3-1.
Gunderson finished her night with a career-high 11 saves.
Offensively,
Emma Contreras and Holt led the Aggies with two shots on goal apiece.
What's up next: Panhandle State looks to get back on track when it returns home Friday at noon for Senior Day versus Texas Wesleyan (2-9-2, 0-6 SAC).
