SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's basketball team (1-5, 0-2 SAC) started slowly and couldn't recover in a 96-64 loss Saturday afternoon at John Brown (4-3, 1-1), but it did make positive history in the process.
For the third straight outing Saturday, the Aggies turned it over fewer than 10 times, marking the first time in recorded program history (since at least 2013-14) such a streak has occurred. Making it more remarkable is the fact that Panhandle State has committed just 16 turnovers the last three games, with only five coming against John Brown and none of those five occurring in the second half.
The Golden Eagles started the day on fire, making seven three-pointers in the first half while shooting 54.1% overall as they raced to a 53-21 halftime edge.
Meanwhile, OPSU struggled to get the ball through the hoop, converting on just eight first-half field goals.
The Aggies played the second frame dead even with the hosts, 43-43, really finding their range during the final 10 minutes of game time. During those closing minutes, OPSU scored 27 of its total points thanks in part to a trio of three-pointers from
Braedyn Ellison. The Arlington, Texas, native closed the game with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting overall.
Playing with another extremely short bench Saturday, only five Aggies found the scoring column.
Christian Campbell and
Aaron Williams Jr. scored 22 and 20, respectively.
Kensington Grant-Brown buried two treys to finish with six points.
Jacob Taitte also contributed five points and a season-high 11 rebounds, which doubled as the game-high in boards.
Coach Charles Belt's Thoughts: "There's nothing to be upset or frustrated about. I'm actually extremely grateful that these guys haven't given up on each other and keep fighting. First half buried us. Didn't have much energy; understandable after playing so many minutes (Thursday night). Two guys tonight play 39 again. We tried to be smart knowing we got a game Tuesday. But they wanted to fight 'til the end. I'm very proud and I look forward to going to battle with these guys."
What's up next: Panhandle State heads back to Anchor D Arena on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. tipoff versus Wayland Baptist (0-5, 0-1).
