No Man's Land Classic Information
GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State women's basketball team (2-1) could not quite recover from a poor start shooting the ball in a 64-60 loss to the University of the Southwest (2-1) Friday evening to tip off the No Man's Land Classic.
The Aggies improved their shooting percentage every quarter against the Mustangs, but a slow 4-of-16 start from the field was too much to overcome.
USW's advantage was especially evident from beyond the arc, as it made seven three-pointers compared to none for OPSU in the contest.
Despite some early struggles for the Aggies, the post play was in sync throughout the first half.
Jamie Baum gave OPSU a lift off the bench with four rebounds and three assists in 11 minutes of action through two quarters, while
Tryssa Dowd and
Emily Bray combined for 11 first-half points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Trailing 33-21 at the intermission, Panhandle State's defense made strides in containing the three-point shot of the Mustangs' Briana Montoya in the third quarter. Still, the Aggies faced a 49-36 deficit heading into the fourth quarter.
Things continued to look bleak down 54-38 with eight minutes remaining, but OPSU found life with second-chance points from Bray that sparked a furious rally.
Dowd and Bray continued to come through with buckets and boards down the stretch to force USW into a timeout in a suddenly 54-50 ballgame with 1:56 remaining.
Dowd then electrified the crowd with a steal that led to a layup for
Zamari Reece that made it 54-52, but, unfortunately, the 14-0 Aggie run would end there as the Mustangs held on to win.
The Aggies were led in the scoring column with 18 points from Dowd. Bray finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while
La'Tommas Johnson-Nash nearly had her own double-double with 10 points and eight boards.
What's up next: OPSU concludes its portion of the No Man's Land Classic on Saturday, with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m. versus Northern New Mexico College (0-2).
