Football Struggles on Road Against Steers

TYLER, Texas — The Oklahoma Panhandle State football team (3-6, 2-5 SAC) struggled to control the line of scrimmage offensively in a 34-21 loss to Texas College (1-7, 1-6 SAC) Saturday afternoon on the road.

Like the Aggies' defense has done so often in 2025 to begin games, it was able to get off the field the first two possessions by forcing the Steers to punt.

Several explosive pass plays for the Steers on their next two drives helped put the home team ahead by two touchdowns, 14-0, however as OPSU would need to play from behind the remainder of the game.

A decimated Panhandle State offense was given a short field to work with early in the second quarter trailing 14-0 thanks to a 45-yard kick return by David Zeller. The offense did its part for a quick answer, as Tach Brewer swung a pass to the left sideline to Justin Lewis, who got a block and ran free for a score.

Texas College overcame an interception from Loren Snead – the ninth of his career – by driving for a pair of field goals before halftime, and the Aggies were unable to protect well against the Steers' defensive line and pass rush as the visitors trailed 20-7 at the half.

The struggles continued to open the third quarter, with TC making it a three-score game, 27-7, early in the half.

Zeller had an answer, however, hitting the seam on the ensuing kickoff and racing past the kicking team for his third touchdown return of the season, an 88-yarder that brought the Aggies within 27-14.

Both defenses made plays throughout the rest of the quarter going into the fourth, and OPSU would be the next team to score following a 50-yard rush from Rylan Johnson and a 24-yard touchdown pass from Brewer to William Rodriguez III that made it 27-21 with just over 10 minutes to play.

A failed fourth-down conversion for the Aggies was unfortunately soon followed by a dagger Texas College touchdown, however, giving the Steers the victory.

Wide receiver D'Kyri Williams was active all game with five receptions for 32 yards. Johnson and Chavez combined for 97 yards on the ground, with Zeller also having a rush for 17 yards to help put the Aggies at 121 yards rushing during the game.

Devin Thomas had a team-high eight tackles, including a shared half sack with Hector Rodriguez. Elzie Barnett III also had a sack, and Jacoriean Rollins made a team-best two stops behind the line of scrimmage.

The Aggies amassed a whopping 248 return yards on the day, led by Zeller with 133 and Dillon Laurer with 90.

What's up next: OPSU looks to end the season on a high note when it travels to play Langston (2-7, 2-5) on Saturday, Nov. 15, for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
