GOODWELL, Okla. – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University baseball team took the field home on Friday to start a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series against Wayland Baptist University. The Aggies fought hard but could not overcome the Pioneers, dropping both doubleheader games, 6-9 and 4-19.
Game One Recap: The Aggies kept things competitive in the series opener, battling back in the seventh inning before falling short in a 9-6 defeat. Wayland Baptist scored early with an RBI double from A. Frausto in the first inning. OPSU answered in the third when Isaiah Halton brought home Luke Reiter on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
Wayland Baptist broke the tie with a solo home run in the fourth inning and added a five-run outburst in the sixth. The Pioneers extended their lead to 9-1 with a two-run homer in the seventh.
The Aggies refused to go down quietly, mounting a rally at the seventh's bottom. Devin Lopez crushed a grand slam to left field, cutting the deficit to 9-5. Isaac Young followed with an RBI single to bring OPSU within three, but the comeback bid ultimately fell short.
Lopez led the Aggies with two hits and four RBIs, while starting pitcher Braden Greene tossed 5.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Game Two Recap: Wayland Baptist's offense exploded early, putting up five runs in the first inning and never looking back in a dominant 19-4 victory.
The Aggies struggled to slow down the Pioneers' bats, while offensively, OPSU got on the board with a four-run fourth inning, led by RBI hits from Kobe Morgan and Bill Bonner. However, the deficit was too large to overcome.
