OPSU Women's Results

WICHITA, Kan. —
The Oklahoma Panhandle State women's track & field squad put together an impressive weekend at the Coach Wilson Invitational hosted by Wichita State, highlighted by multiple personal records and the 4x800-meter relay squad taking third place, setting the bar as head coach Cyrus Hall's first indoor women's 4x800-meter group to compete for the Aggies.

That 4x800-meter team on Friday consisted of Carolina Valenzuela, Ki'Anna Jones, Shania Chavez and Breyanna Kemp, who competed against five other teams and came around in 10:32.95 to set the school-record mark.

Lillyan Gerow finished inside the top 20 out of 30 runners in the 3,000-meters Friday night with a personal record of 12:16.54.

Also competing Friday were Brittney Carrasco and Avery Brown in the weight throw. The pair placed 26th and 27th, respectively out of 39, at 11.33 and 11.08 meters. Both athletes participated in the shot put Saturday morning, with Brown notching a distance of 9.87 meters to take 24th of 44.

On Saturday, the Aggies were paced in the 60-meters by Ashlynn Perez with her 8.21 second-finish to grab 27th of 57 sprinters.

Valenzuela led OPSU in the mile with her 5:47.33, taking 15th of 52. Chavez' time of 6:00.56 also placed inside the top half, and it was good for a huge PR of 23 seconds.

Kemp clocked a time of 1:46.83 in the 600-meters to pace Panhandle State, while Paizlie Reyna-Mata led the team in the 200-meters with her time of 27.63 seconds to take 20th of 50.

Coach Hall's Thoughts: "The ladies all battled today. They ran well, they executed well, they just didn't run fast."

"… But this track is small, the curves are tight, it's a little bouncy … so I knew coming over it was going to be slow, and that's one of the reasons I brought them over here."

"The throwers are getting really close … they're a tweak or so away from figuring it out in the weight throw and dropping some really good marks there, so that was promising."

"I'm really, really happy with our distance runners. Our times aren't super fast right now, but they are executing exactly how I want them to," Hall said, noting how impressive many of their personal records have been given their limited training thus far. "I'm really proud of that group this week."

What's up next: Women's track & field has a week off before returning to action Feb. 13-14, primarily at Washburn University for the Ichabod Invitational.
