GOODWELL, Okla. —Oklahoma Panhandle State University Athletics has listed softball's Erin Hornback and Matao Laguna of baseball as the Mack's Motorsports Aggies of the Week from Jan. 26-Feb. 1.
Softball season opened this weekend for the Aggies, and Hornback stepped up to the plate and delivered. In the four-game stretch, Hornback went 6-13, had three stolen bags, two RBIs and a triple on the weekend that featured matchups against No. 12 Our Lady of the Lake and Texas A&M San Antonio. Defensively, the returning sophomore outfielder recorded four putouts on the weekend as well as an assisted out. Her all-around efforts marked an outstanding performance to start the season for the Aggies.
Laguna made his Aggie debut in game two of the series at the University of the Southwest, entering in the bottom of the fourth inning with his team down 4-3. There was one out with runners on the corners, and the junior pitcher came in and shut down the Mustangs' hopes of pulling away. The right-hander then went on to shut them out entirely for three more innings on the road, while the OPSU lineup came back to win the game, 6-4. Laguna would go on to have an impressive stat line as the winning pitcher of 3.2 innings pitches while allowing two hits, striking out three Mustangs, and posting an elite 0.55 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched).
