Box Score 2 Goodwell, Okla.—Both the Panhandle State men's and women's basketball teams took conference losses to the University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at Anchor D Arena. The Aggie women fell 66-46, and the men battled a No. 20 Drovers team that claimed an 86-75 victory in the end.
A slow start saw the Aggie women trailing 18-7 after the first ten minutes of play. Although the Aggies improved shooting from 27.3 percent to 35 percent by the fourth period, the Drovers maintained an overall shooting percentage of 47.8 and held a healthy lead throughout the game. Panhandle's leading scorers were
Addison Munsch with 16 points and
Madison Dearmin with ten points; Munsch and Dearmin also led the Aggies in rebounds with six apiece and offered three assists each in the game.
Hannah Faulks and
Monti Regier both finished with eight points and Regier led the team with four steals.
The men's team kept pace with their opponents and owned a 34-33 lead at halftime. After the break, the Drovers gained a quick six-point lead in the first minute and a half of action; USAO hit a three off a missed shot by Panhandle and added four points off consecutive Aggie turnovers. The Aggies tied things up at 46-46 at the 15:29 mark after a dunk by
Jerrell Doorbal was backed by a layup from
DK Sumo. The Drovers reclaimed the advantage on missed Aggie shots and held the lead through the remainder of the game. Sumo went 3-8 from long distance and finished with 19 points and eight rebounds on the day.
Jace Kerr led the game with 29 points for Panhandle and
Jaedon Whitfield landed another double-double on 12 points and 13 boards.
Head men's coach
Jerry Olson felt his team executed well but fell short on offense stating, "We just didn't shoot very well. We missed shots and missed free throws." Olson gave credit to USAO adding, "They hit shots and got rebounds missed shots." He concluded, "I'm pleased with our effort and how hard we played; this team just keeps fighting."
Both Aggie teams now sit 9-5 on the season. The women hold a 2-5 record within the Sooner Athletic Conference and the men's team move to 3-4 in the SAC. Panhandle State basketball takes to the road for a three-game conference stretch. The Aggies meet with Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas on Monday, Jan. 15 and follow-up with a contest in McPherson, Kan. on Thursday, Jan. 18 against Central Christian. The teams then travel to Oklahoma City for a double-header against Oklahoma City University on Saturday, Jan. 20 before returning to Anchor D Arena on Jan. 27 for an FCA Gameday and matchups against Southwestern Christian.
