KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's basketball team closed out its calendar-year 2019 slate of games by suffering an 88-78 loss at Calvary University. The Aggies (3-6) and Warriors (5-4) battled closely the entire game, with the largest lead of the contest at 12 points by the hosts midway through the second half at the Pyramid Athletic Center.
Both teams seemed to mirror each other's shooting output. In the first half, each struggled mightily to score with OPSU hitting just 20 percent (6-30) and Calvary slightly better at 28 percent (10-35), heading to the locker room with CU ahead 30-23.
In the second half, the Aggies' shooting heated up considerably to 59 percent (20-34). Unfortunately for the visitors, the Warrior woes from the field dissipated as well, hitting 58 percent (21-36). Both teams totaled eight made from beyond the arc.
The difference for Panhandle State came down to two areas: free throws and rebounds. While both teams had 18 makes from the charity stripe, Panhandle had nine more attempts – 19 to 28 – than did Calvary.
On the boards, the Warriors held a significant advantage: 58 to 32. The Aggies were out-rebounded on the offensive glass by a 19-10 margin and 39-22 on the defensive end. OPSU made nine steals and forced CU into 19 turnovers as a team.
Jalen Williams (Edmond, Okla.), a freshman, booked 19 points to lead OPSU's scoring effort, hitting 8-of-18 from the floor. He also grabbed five rebounds and had two assists.
Freshman
Cameron Ray (Kinta, Okla.) – playing in his first collegiate game – responded like a thoroughbred, coming off the bench to give Head Coach
Mark Laird and the team 16 points. Ray shined by hitting 5-of-9 from the floor and led all three-point shooters by going 4-of-7 from long distance.
Freshman
Auston Chatman (Missouri City, Texas) had his first collegiate double-double game, scoring 14 points and corralling a game-high 10 rebounds. Chatman also passed off for three assists and made one steal.
An 11-point game from sophomore
Brett Williams (Bridgetown, Barbados) rounded out the Aggie quartet of double-figure scorers. He made 3-of-6 from the field, while sharing game-leading totals with five assists and three steals to his credit.
Sophomore transfer
Quentin Fankhouser (Goodwell, Okla.) added nine points. Freshman
Michael Bagwill (Farmersville, Texas) had five points in his collegiate debut, as well, and junior
Daniel Holyfield (Albuquerque, N.M.) four points to round out the Panhandle scoring.
The road woes also continued for OPSU, falling to 0-5 on the opponent's home floor.
The Aggies return to action on Thursday, January 2 in a Sooner Athletic Conference game at Texas Wesleyan University.
