PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's soccer had its five-match unbeaten streak come to an end, losing its Sooner Athletic Conference opener at perennial power Wayland Baptist University, 6-0, at Hilliard Field. The Aggies fell to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the SAC, while the Pioneers upped their record to 5-0-2 and 1-0 in conference play.
Panhandle found itself down at halftime, 2-0, before a four-goal avalanche in the final 45 minutes sealed the visitor's fate.
The Aggies could not muster much of an offensive threat versus a stingy WBU defensive half. Conversely, the Pioneers out-shot OPSU by a 34-3 margin for the contest, putting 19 directly on goal.
Tayze Ellington,
Cheslon Carollisen and
Nicolas Nieto all had one shot, apiece, for Panhandle.
In the Aggie nets,
Cristhofer Monje played 63 minutes and had nine saves, allowing five goals in his 25 shots faced.
Winston Sappenfield took over the final 27 minutes, giving up a goal in nine shots against him. Sappenfield had four saves in his stint.
The loss was the first for the Aggie team since the program's first-ever match – versus Texas College – back on August 24. Both OPSU losses have been by shutout.
Panhandle State will next be in action on Tuesday, October 1 (7 p.m.) at Oklahoma City University.
