Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. – Facing the No 3-ranked team in the NAIA, the Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's basketball team was defeated, 79-56, by Mid-American Christian University in a Sooner Athletic Conference contest. The Aggies fell to 3-10 overall and 0-6 in the SAC, while the Evangels remained unbeaten at 15-0 and 6-0 in conference.
The youthful Panhandle State squad battled the highly-rated MACU team the entire way, but could not overcome the visitor's hot shooting, especially in the first half. For the game, the Evangels shot a blistering 51 percent (33-65) from the field and were just as deft from beyond the arc, hitting 9-of-20 (45 percent). Conversely, OSPU shot 35 percent (20-58) from the field and actually had one more trey made than did MACU, shooting 10-of-30 from three-point range.
Panhandle had a slight deficit on the glass, as MACU out-rebounded the hosts, 35-32. But the real disparity was in turnovers, where OPSU had 17 miscues and the Evangels nine.
That allowed Mid-America Christian to procure a 23-point lead (45-22) in the first half, leading Panhandle wire-to-wire. The Aggies refused to fold, however, and matched MACU in the second half, as each team scored 34 points.
Four OPSU players finished in double-digit scoring in the setback, led by freshman
Jalen Williams. Williams scored 13 points, hitting 5-of-15, including a pair of three-balls. He also pulled down five rebounds.
Auston Chatman and
Cameron Ray each scored 11 points. Each buried three baskets from long range to lead the Aggies. Chatmon also hauled in five rebounds, while Ray led his team with three assists.
Quentin Fankhouser's 10 points rounded out Panhandle's quartet of double figure scorers. Fankhouser also wrangled four caroms off the glass.
Daniel Holyfield had a total of seven boards to lead OPSU. Freshman
Thomas Manuel grabbed six rebounds, five on the defensive end. Holyfield scored six points and had both of the Aggies' blocked shots.
