Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. – The combination of a hot-shooting opponent and giving away two to three inches across the front line spelled doom for the Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's basketball squad versus the University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma. The Aggies (3-9, 0-5 SAC) dropped the Sooner Athletic Conference bout to the visiting Drovers (7-7, 2-3 SAC) by a 96-56 score at Anchor D Arena.
OPSU could not find its rhythm in the first half, shooting just 27 percent (9-of-34) from the floor, and trailing 49-25 at the break. The Aggies warmed up a bit in the second half and upped its shooting to 40 percent (10-of-25) in that stanza, finishing at 32 percent (19-59) for the game. Panhandle was 10-for-30 from three-point range, as well.
Meanwhile, USAO connected on 38-of-69 field goals, for a 55-percent shooting clip. The Drovers had a big night from three-point country, as well, hitting 16-of 34 trey attempts (47 percent). That, added to a 41-27 edge in rebounds and 10 blocks of Panhandle shots, sealed the Aggies' fate.
Freshman
Auston Chatman (Missouri City, Texas) had a big night for the OPSU with a team-leading 16 points. Chatman was 6-for-15 shooting overall and 4-of-10 from behind the arc. He also had a pair of rebounds to his credit.
Sophomore transfer
Quentin Fankhouser (Goodwell, Okla.) came close to a double-double, booking nine points and a team-best 10 rebounds (nine on the defensive glass). Fankhouser also had a pair of assists.
Daniel Holyfield (Albuquerque, N.M.),
Michael Bagwill (Farmersville, Texas) and
Thomas Manuel each contributed seven points to OPSU's cause. Holyfield had five rebounds and a blocked shot, while Bagwill and Manuel each grabbed four caroms. It was Manuel's OPSU debut.
Another freshman,
Jalen Williams (Edmond, Okla.), had a game-leading five assists, while making a pair of steals and scoring three points. Bagwill had three assists.
Cameron Ray's (Kinta, Okla.) six points and one from
Brett Williams (Bridgetown, Barbados) rounded out the OPSU scorers versus the Drovers.
Panhandle State will next be in action on Saturday (Jan. 11) at home versus Mid-America Christian University, the No. 3-ranked team in the nation for the NAIA. Tipoff at Anchor D Arena will be at 3:45 p.m.
