Panhandle State's women's team built on their momentum during Southwestern Oklahoma State University's rodeo this past weekend as they placed second while the men's team had some tough luck.
McKenna Brennan, senior, kept her fire lit after her win in the Goat Tying last weekend placing second in the long round with a 7.5-second run. Junior, Parker McIntyre, is hanging on to her opportunity to take a trip to Casper with a 8.3-second run splitting ninth and tenth. Brennan stayed consistent with another 7.5-second run in the short go to win it, and split first and second in the average. McIntyre added a little speed to with an 8-second run placing fourth in the short-go and average.
Senior Hope Lutrell, showed her experience in the Breakaway Roping splitting third and fourth in the long round with a 2.8-second run. Juniors Kayla Johnson and Tori Kunz placing in the long round with 3.3-second and 3.4-second runs respectively. Lutrell made a solid run with a 3.3-seconds to placed fourth in the short go and average. Kunz played it smart making sure to get a catch with a 4.1-second run which had her split fifth and sixth in the go and sixth in the average. Johnson came up empty under the Saturday night lights leaving her with a no time.
Ryler Allred, a senior, was the lone Aggie from the men's team to get the team points for the weekend. He placed third in the long round of the Tie-Down Roping. Allred made sure to get a good tie on the calf in the short go placing sixth with a 11.8-second run which left him fourth in the average.
Allred also made it back to the short go after splitting sixth and seventh with a 5-second run in the Steer Wrestling. Unfortunately, a tough draw left him with a no time in the short go which took him out of the average.
With success from this weekend the women's team kept their goal of making the CNFR as a team within reach of 450 points. Brennen jumped into the second in the region of the Goat Tying after her win with McIntyre sitting fourth just 20 points out of the top three. Rillie Ratliff holds steady third in the region in the Breakaway with Kunz and Brennan hot on her heels to break into the top three.
For the men's team, senior Bailey Small, holds steady in the Saddle Bronc Riding with third in the region with Brett Coffman within reach out of a trip to Casper. Eduardo Aguilar is 10 points out of the top 3 in the Bull Riding.
Panhandle State rodeo team will travel to Fort Hays State University this weekend before they finish out the year at their hometown rodeo. As the season starts rounding out, the cowboys and cowgirls continue to push forward with hopes of going to Casper, Wyoming during June for the College National Finals Rodeo.
