NORMAN, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's and women's track & field teams opened up the 2026 portion of their indoor campaigns Thursday at the University of Oklahoma's JD Martin Invitational.
Â
The meet provided the Aggies with a good opportunity to set benchmarks and shake off the rust as the track & field season ramps up quickly over the coming weeks.
Â
School Record Set: Ayden Hendershot rewrote his own school record in the weight throw, breaking 13.00 meters for the first time with a mark of 13.06 meters, good for 13th place in a loaded 21-man field.
Â
Men's Performances: Five other Aggies also competed in the weight throw, with each eclipsing 10.25 meters.
Aaron Vinson,
William Sirmans and
Xavyer Mosqueda rounded out the top four OPSU finishes in the event, as each surpassed 10.75 meters in their top throws.
Â
Hendershot also paced OPSU in the shot put, boasting a mark of 12.44 meters. In another shot-put grouping,
Wyatt Hamilton notched himself a second-place finish with a distance of 11.91 meters. Just behind Hamilton was
Xavyer Mosqueda, who placed third at 11.76 meters.
Â
Ismael Jimenez and
Trenton Peterson both competed in the sprinting events, with Peterson leading the way at 7.38 seconds in the 60-meters, and Jimenez boasting a time of 24.02 seconds in the 200-meters.
Â
Bramhan Matschek ran the 3,000-meters in 11:02.19 to round out the Aggies' day.
Â
Women's Performances: Akia Bowens set a personal record in the 60-meters, finishing 0.06 seconds faster than her 2025 best by coming in at 8.45 seconds. The sophomore also competed in the 200-meters, crossing in 29.04 seconds.
Â
Distance runners
Carolina Valenzuela and
Shania Chavez were not far off the pace in a strong 3,000-meters field, as the pair finished in 11:34.29 and 11:47.05, respectively.
Â
Avery Brown led the Aggies in both the shot put (10.11 meters) and weight throw (11.97 meters), with the weight throw marking her personal record.
Brittney Carrasco was consistent in her first two weight throws, notching a top distance of 11.68 meters.
Â
Coach Cyrus Hall's Thoughts: "I thought it went pretty solid today. Obviously we didn't do anything crazy good, but it was solid. I think our men's throws group was really good today for where they're at. … They put up some pretty decent marks, and I think that there's a lot of room for growth for those guys, so I'm excited to see what they do moving forward."
Â
Hall noted how the timing of the meet – coming off of winter break and being moved up a day due to forecast inclement weather – may have thrown things off for some, but he described each men's and women's group as solid. He especially highlighted Hendershot's record, Bowens' personal best, and Jimenez' efforts after taking time away from competitive running.
Â
"I'm glad they got the work in, and we'll get back to work here and get them ready to go to Wichita next week and see if we can make some improvements."
Â
What's up next: A sprinter-heavy group for the Panhandle State men's and women's teams are set to head to the Colorado Invitational in Boulder, Colorado, on Saturday before the squads head to Wichita, Kansas, on Jan. 30-31.
