Day 1 Recap | OPSU Men's Results

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  —
Xavyer Mosqueda headlined the Oklahoma Panhandle State men's team's efforts on the final day of the Sooner Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, presented by Digital Scoreboards, while the Aggies stayed put in seventh place out of 11 teams.

Panhandle State concluded the championship meet with 45 points, fending off Science & Arts for the seventh-place spot. Nelson University won the team title, scoring 141 points.

The javelin throwers shined for OPSU, as Mosqueda, Wyatt Hamilton and William Sirmans all placed inside the top eight, combining for 10 points in the event. Mosqueda took third with a school-record distance of 47.01 meters, while Hamilton and Sirmans notched marks of 42.91 and 39.45 meters, respectively.

"Throws-wise, we had a fun day today. Javelin-wise, we put three guys in the finals, and they all scored, they all PR'ed. It was awesome," head coach Cyrus Hall said. Hamilton's personal record came by over seven meters, and Sirmans' personal best topped his previous mark by nearly four meters.

"(All of) those guys are going to be really good jav throwers if we can get them some training. … Really, they just started training for javelin in mid-March. I think next year with a full year of training, and if I get them some (javelin) shoes, those guys can be really good," Hall said.

In the shot put, Hamilton snuck into eighth place with a personal-best distance of 12.48 meters. Hendershot also threw well, taking ninth with a PR of 12.18 meters.

OPSU also earned six points by taking third in the 4x400-meter relay, ran by Alan Martinez, Austin White, Christian Soto and David Okorie. The group closed with a time 3:21.20, and Hall noted that each split was under 51.0 seconds.

"The boys ran great, I thought," Hall said, mentioning how it's been a year of adversity for the sprinters as they've battled injury, sickness and new training tactics.

Also on the track, White took a point in the 100-meters, crossing in 10.72 seconds of an extremely tight race. Officially, Bruington was just behind at 10.73 seconds, and Soto came in at 10.81 seconds.

White took seventh in the 200-meters for two more points with his time of 21.92 seconds. Soto nearly scored as well, placing 10th with his time of 22.03 seconds.

Joshua Samaron competed in the 5,000-meters, and he took 17th of 25 runners at 16:58.86.

"(Josh) ran hard, he ran gutsy, but man, it was just tough out there today," Hall said.

Coach Hall's Thoughts: "I thought the kids fought today. It was another super hot and muggy day. It was windy today, too, and that really hurts the distance races."

"On the sprints side, it was a mixed bag. We did some good things; we did some OK things. We weren't bad, but it just wasn't there for us like we wanted it to be."

Hall was "very happy" with the performance of his 4x400-meter relay team.

"I feel like if you have good 4x4's, you have a good team. So even though we have small numbers … if I can put a competitive 4x4 out there where we can score points, I feel like we're maximizing our potential with what we've got."

What's up next: Aggie track members are slated to be back in action April 30 through May 1 in Lubbock, Texas, at the Corky Crofoot Shootout hosted by Texas Tech University.
