WICHITA, Kan. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's track & field team competed at the Coach Herm Wilson Invitational Friday and Saturday, where
Joshua Samaron broke a school record, and the 4x400-meter relay team ended the meet with a win.
Samaron topped the 3,000-meters school-record mark by eight seconds Friday night, finishing with a time of 9:30.16.
"(Samaron) is running really well right now, every week he's getting better and better. A big part of that is he's just putting it together with his consistency … and he's seeing the benefits of that," head coach
Cyrus Hall said. The senior also had a personal record in the mile on Saturday, crossing in 4:41.01.
On Saturday, in the invitational's final event, the 4x400-meter team of
Alan Martinez,
Jason Granillo,
Diego Hernandez and
David Okorie ran a 3:28.70 to finish a split-second ahead of runner-up Northwestern Oklahoma State. The effort was strong enough to notch a win in the 14-team event.
In the throwing events,
Xavyer Mosqueda was just shy of his best mark in the shot put, recording a long of 12.43 meters. Freshman
Wyatt Hamilton also had an impressive mark of 11.96 meters.
Ayden Hendershot took 23rd in the weight throw Friday with a distance of 12.49 meters. All four Aggies competing in that event finished within the top 40 of 49, with
Jayden Blair and
William Sirmans bunching up at 10.88 and 10.65 meters, respectively.
Bruington, a sprinter, also entered a pair of jumping events. He notched a mark of 6.15 meters in the long jump to finish above 12 jumpers in the 38-man field Friday night, before recording a top triple jump of 12.85 meters Saturday, where Bruington improved on each attempt.
Alan Martinez led the Aggies and grabbed a top-10 finish at seventh out of 60 in the 400-meters, clocking a time of 51.46 seconds.
Bruington and Christian Ortiz were neck-and-neck in the 60-meters at 7.08 and 7.11 seconds, respectively, to finish in the top 22 out of 105 runners in prelims. Ortiz also ran well in the 200-meters with his 23.02-second finish to take 15th of 62.
"Our sprinters had a good day today. They're actually disappointed, because they didn't run fast, but this track is small, the curves are tight, it's a little bouncy … so I knew coming over it was going to be slow, and that's one of the reasons I brought them over here."
Hall also highlighted
Ismael Jimenez, as the sprinter recorded personal bests in all three of his events, the 60-meters, 200-meters and 400-meters.
Bramhan Matschek, too, notched a PR in both the mile and the 1,000-meters.
Other Thoughts from Coach Hall: "The throwers are getting really close … they're a tweak or so away from figuring it out in the weight throw and dropping some really good marks there, so that was promising."
"I'm really, really happy with our distance runners. Our times aren't super fast right now, but they are executing exactly how I want them to," Hall said, noting how impressive many of their personal records have been given their limited training thus far. "I'm really proud of that group this week."
What's up next: The OPSU men have a week off before returning to action Feb. 13-14, primarily at Washburn University for the Ichabod Invitational.
