WAXAHACHIE, Texas  — After one day of competition for the Oklahoma Panhandle State men at the Sooner Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, presented by Digital Scoreboards, the Aggies are in seventh place out of 11 squads with 24 points.
Â
OPSU is nine points behind Langston University for the middle spot going into the final day, while host-Nelson University sits atop the team leaderboard at 83 points.
Â
Highlighting the Aggies' day was their 4x100-meter relay team, which saw
Dillon Bruington,
Gino Sapalo,
Austin White and
Christian Soto get second place to net eight points with a time of 41.10 seconds. The time sat 0.16 seconds short of the winners from Nelson, and it was within 0.10 seconds of being fast enough to qualify for the NAIA National Championships.
Â
Head coach
Cyrus Hall noted that cleaner handoffs likely would have given his team a win in the event, though he remained optimistic about the group's chances going forward.
Â
"We missed qualifying for Nationals by 0.09 seconds, which is tough, but we've got two more weeks to go," Hall said.
Â
Other track events included the 400-meters, where
David Okorie snatched a point by running a season-fastest 49.48 seconds.
Alan Martinez was not far off of earning points, taking 11th of 19 runners with his 49.71.
Â
"(That was) probably the best race David's ran all year," Hall said after the day.
Â
Bramhan Matschek took seventh place in the steeplechase, crossing in 11:56.26 to grab two points for the team.
Â
Several Aggies took part in the hammer and discus throws Friday, where the team combined to collect 13 points.
Â
Xavyer Mosqueda and
Ayden Hendershot took fourth and fifth in the discus with marks of 39.22 and 39.21 meters, respectively.
William Sirmans snuck into the top eight at 35.97 meters, and
Wyatt Hamilton advanced to finals, topping out at 35.85 meters.
Â
Hamilton finished in sixth place in the discus, notching a distance of 40.68 meters.
Jayden Blair also made finals with a mark of 35.77 meters.
Â
"Both those guys (Hamilton and Blair) are freshmen, and I'm really excited about them. … Those guys could all be really good next year," Hall said.
Â
Of note,
Richmond Howell notched a personal-record discus throw of 31.50 meters.
Â
What's up next: The Aggie men are back for the final day of the SAC Championships on Saturday, with field events slated to begin at 11 a.m. and track events starting at 2 p.m.
