GOODWELL, Okla. – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University soccer teams had mixed results versus Central Christian College, as the men came back to forge a 1-1 tie in double overtime and the women absorbed a 13-0 defeat in the opening game of the doubleheader.
The Panhandle State men are now 8-4-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Aggie ladies fell to 3-9 on the year and 0-7 in SAC matches.
In the men's contest, OPSU allowed only an unlikely goal in the 14th minute. CCC player Matias Nunez lofted in a shot from 43-yard out that seemed to catch the Aggies off guard, as the ball just carried into the right corner and away from the outstretched hands of Panhandle goalie
Cristhofer Monje.
Panhandle's defense shut down the Tigers for the next 96 minutes. In the 32nd minute, the Aggies got the equalizer on
Allan Gamboa's fifth goal in the Crimson and Blue. At the 31:26 juncture of the match, Gamboa took a pass from
Tayze Ellington and sent it into the far corner to knot the match at 1-1.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, that would also be their last score. Despite being the aggressor late in the match – out-shooting CCC 7-2 in the overtime segments – Panhandle could not find the deciding tally.
Despite not getting the desired result, OPSU Head Coach
Brandon Misuraca found several bright spots, including the play of Nicholas Nieto and
Sean Wallace. "I thought he did well breaking up plays and winning the initial headers," Misuraca said. "Sean switched the point of attack coming in and immediately made an impact."
Both teams produced identical offensive numbers: 15 shot attempts, with five on-goal. Likewise, both goalkeepers had four saves and were charged with one goal. The Aggies had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks taken.
In the women's contest to begin the day, Panhandle State's goalkeepers combined for 21 saves in the setback versus Central Christian.
Marybel Garcia had 10 saves in the opening half and Tessa Francoise nine more in the second, with two team saves recorded, as well.
OPSU had four shots, with three on-goals.
Adri Mendoza,
Yudith Banda and
Jace Ramos all put shots on frame in the loss. Both teams will next play at Mid-America Christian on Saturday (Oct. 26), with start times of 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men.
