GOODWELL, Okla. - Oklahoma Panhandle State University will welcome the NAIA's No. 20-ranked team and Sooner Athletic Conference leader - Ottawa University-Arizona - to Anchor D Stadium at Carl Wooten Field on Saturday, October 5. For the Aggies, it will be the team's first home contest of 2019, after spending four-straight games on the road, as it looks for a second-consecutive SAC win.
Â
Every other SAC school has played at least two home games at this juncture. The Aggies (1-3, 1-1 SAC) and Spirit (4-0, 2-0 SAC) are each coming off victories in last Saturday's slate. While the OUAZ sits atop the SAC, OPSU is in fifth place in the league standings.
Â
Last week, OUAZ put a licking on Wayland Baptist in an 80-21 rout last week. The Spirit has played three games at home and just one (versus Doane University) on the road in its season opener. Ottawa is at, or near, the top of virtually every SAC offensive category, averaging 515.8 yards and 52.0 points per game coming into this weekend.
Â
The Aggies earned their first victory of 2109 last Saturday at Texas College, 34-8. In that game quarterbacks
Tony Brown and DeShawn Cumby shined on offense. Brown ran for 122 yards on 17 carries, often extending drives with his feet. Cumby completed 4-of-7 passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns (to
Jake Martinez and
Danny Valverde Jr.).
Â
Luis Rivas converted two field goals and all four PAT's. Defensively, a trio of Aggies -
Tony Davis,
Antonio Vaughn and
Charoy Joseph-all intercepted passes by the Steers. For Davis, it was his second pilfered pass of the year.
Â
This will be just the second meeting between the teams. In 2018, OPSU scored a 38-35 win in Surprise, Arizona. That game was decided by an Aggie field goal with 00:00 showing on the fourth quarter clock! On defense for Panhandle,
D'Darrin Primes had seven tackles and
Diamante Pounds added five, along with 2.0 sacks and a fumble recovery.
Â
On the year for OPSU,
Tony Brown is averaging 76.3 yards per game rushing and 5.8 yards per carry. Receivers
Jaishone Brown and
Seth Barbarino average 11.2 and 10.6 yards per catch, respectively. Barbarino has done a little bit of everything for the Aggies this season, also averaging 7.0 yards per punt return, 12.2 yards per kickoff return and 32.2 yards per punt.
Â
On defense for Panhandle, Pounds had a total of 35 tackles this season, 24 of which are solo.
Ja'Quavion Daniels has 22 total tackles and fumble return for a TD versus Langston.
Tony Davis adds 16 total tackles and his two interceptions.Â
