OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University women's and men's golf teams opened up the 2020-21 season by competing at the Southern Plains Collegiate. The event, hosted by Oklahoma City University, was played at the par-72 Gaillardia Country Club (5,840 yards for women 7,001 yards for men).
The Aggie ladies were led by newcomer Cheyenne Gutierrez, who was 14th with a 36-hole score of 184 (89-95). Returning Panhandle players
Mattie Grumbles and
Jacey Steel were right behind Gutierrez in 15th and 16th, respectively.
Grumbles shot rounds 94-94=187 and Steel bounced back from a 100 on Monday, with an 89 Tuesday to finish at 189. Newcomer Gracie Huntress was 19th in the final tally.
On the men's 54-hole results, OPSU newcomer Mario Romero led the team by finishing 34th in the 63-player field. Romero carded rounds of 78 and 75 thru 36 holes, but a third-round 82 dropped him down the leaderboard with a 235 aggregate. Romero had four birdies in the tournament, three in the final round alone. He also had one of the event's two Eagles in Round One on the par-5, No. 6 hole. Ironically, it was that same hole that ruined a good third round for him, as he carded a quadruple bogey 9.
Another new face to the Aggie roster, Brady McGregor, was the squad's second finisher at 88-98-79=265, good for 56th. OPSU senior
Karsten Harrison was 57th posting results of 90-86-94=270. Junior Quentin Fankhouser finished 58th overall.
