HOBBS, N.M. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's golf team competed Monday and Tuesday at the tough 7,103-yard layout at Rockwind Community Links hosted by the University of the Southwest, where it finished 12th of 17 teams with a three-day score of 932.
The "Battling in the Desert" tournament, which featured a loaded field including the champion and preseason NAIA No. 2 Oklahoma City and No. 8 Texas Wesleyan, shined a spotlight on breast cancer awareness as the teams, course and host banded together for the cause.
OPSU put together its best collective score in the opening round (309), with
Worathan Thammachokecharoen finishing in the red with a 71 on the par-72 course.
Paul Mercado also had a solid 18 holes to start the tournament, turning in a 76 with two birdies and 11 pars on his card.
Thammachokecharoen continued to lead the Aggies over the final two rounds with scores of 72 and 75. The senior's three-round total of two-over, 218, saw him finish 13th of 88 golfers.
Mercado and
Thantup Saengvut joined Thammachokecharoen with two rounds in the 70s to close the tournament. Mercado's 54-hole total was 232 (76-79-77), and Saengvut's was 237 (82-79-76).
Takudzwa Basopo started strong for the Aggies with an opening-round 80, followed by scores of 82 and 85.
Xavyer Mosqueda shot a trio of 83s, as his scorecard was highlighted by an eagle on the par-five fourth hole on Tuesday.
Competing as an individual,
Rance Angeley's second round was his best, as he had three birdies en route to shooting 81.
What's up next: OPSU's final tournament of the fall season is set to be played at the renowned RainDance National Golf Course in Windsor, Colorado, from Oct. 13-14.
