AMARILLO, Texas — The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's golf team fought through windy conditions Monday and Tuesday, improving significantly each round and capping the "Top of Texas" tournament with a final-round 317.
While OPSU battled back from a rough opening 18 holes at the La Paloma Course at Tascosa Golf Club, it was unable to climb out of eighth place despite holding a cushion over seventh-place Southwestern Christian midway through play on Tuesday. No. 17 Wayland Baptist won the event, posting a three-day score of 872.
Thantup Saengvut and
Worathan Thammachokecharoen both finished tied-23rd out of 46 golfers individually with three-round totals of 22-over, 235.
Saengvut closed the Top of Texas strong with a 76 and 75, respectively, on the par-71 course during the final two rounds. On Tuesday, the Rayong, Thailand, native played a double-bogey-free 18 holes, which featured a bogey-free back nine of 34.
Thammachokecharoen, meanwhile, was the Aggies' most consistent player, posting 79-77-79. He overcame a couple big numbers by making par or better on 63% of holes throughout the tournament, and, like Saengvut, his efforts were highlighted by a two-under 34 on the back nine Tuesday.
