Jo Meaker Classic
OPSU athletes set two program records Thursday at the Jo Meaker Classic, coming thanks to the performances of
Breyanna Kemp and
Carolina Valenzuela.
Â
Kemp set the school record 200-meters time at 24.75 seconds, 0.19 seconds faster than her own previous mark.
Ashlynn Perez had a personal record in the race by crossing in 26.24 seconds, and
Akia Bowens ran well at 27.79 seconds.
Â
"Bre crushed it," Hall said, making note that her time stands alone at the top of the Sooner Athletic Conference this season in the 200-meters.
Â
Valenzuela's school record occurred Thursday in the 3,000-meters steeplechase, as she recorded a time of 12:24.68 to top her own record. Also running in the race was
Lillyan Gerow, who bested the previous program-record mark as well but was 10 seconds behind Valenzuela at 12:34.31 for a big PR.
Â
"I thought Lillyan was really, really, really good today," Hall said as he also noted Valenzuela's accomplishment. "Really happy with that going into conference."
Â
Ki'Anna Jones competed in the 800-meters Thursday and set her third straight PR in the event by finishing in 2:27.61.
Â
"I thought we had a good day today (Thursday)," Hall said. "This is probably the best I've felt leaving a meet all outdoor season."
Â
On Friday,
Ashlynn Perez sprinted to a time of 12.51 seconds in the 100-meters, and
Shania Chavez crossed in 20:15.79 in the 5,000-meters.
Â
Kemp came through with a season-best 58.00 seconds in the 400-meters Friday.
Â
"Breyanna ran really well, I thought. She ran almost a perfect first 300 meters, and then she got a little sloppy the last hundred meters because she was running into a pretty hard wind," Hall said. "But I was really happy with her performance today; she's coming on really strong here late in the season."
