Day 1 Recap | OPSU Women's Results

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  —
The Oklahoma Panhandle State women's track & field team remained in sixth place Saturday to close the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships, presented by Digital Scoreboards, with their efforts headlined by Breyanna Kemp's win in the 200-meters.

OPSU closed the conference meet with 62 points, staying in the top half of the conference at sixth of 12 teams. Nelson University narrowly won the championship over runner-up Oklahoma City.

Kemp emerged victorious in the 200-meters with a slightly wind-aided time of 24.94 seconds, claiming the Aggies' lone win in the 2026 conference championships.

After the meet, head coach Cyrus Hall described the thrilling race, which was part of a big day for Kemp.

"(Breyanna) didn't get out well. She came off the curve way in the back and then just charged down the home straight and ran all the way to the line to get the victory, so she earned it. It was close, even with 50 meters to go there were still like four girls in front of her, so she closed them all down hard and won."

Kemp also played a crucial role in the women's 4x400-meter relay team's third-place, 4:03.88 finish, in which the group of Carolina Valenzuela, Ki'Anna Jones, Paizlie Reyna-Mata and Kemp came from behind to beat John Brown University's squad by 0.09 seconds.

"The girls ran a great race," Hall said. "Carolina led off, Ki'Anna went second, Paizlie ran an awesome leg in third … and then Bre ran a monster anchor leg and just passed the John Brown girl at the line."

Shania Chavez scored four points for the Aggies in the 5,000-meters, crossing in 20:12.27 for fifth place.

"(Shania) battled hard, I'm proud of her. She really wanted to get on the podium, but it just wasn't meant to be today," Hall said, noting that the pack "strung out on her" and she was left running into a hard wind each lap.

Ashlynn Perez and Jones just missed out on contributing points towards OPSU's score, as they finished 10th and ninth, respectively, in the 100- and 800-meters. Perez clocked a time of 12.49 seconds, and Jones recorded a 2:30.53.

In the field events, Neo Trim added six points with a season-best triple jump of 10.22 meters, taking third place. Meanwhile, Avery Brown was just shy of scoring in the shot put with her ninth-place distance of 9.95 meters.

Coach Hall's Thoughts: "I thought the kids fought today. It was another super hot and muggy day. It was windy today, too, and that really hurts the distance races."

"On the sprints side, it was a mixed bag. We did some good things; we did some OK things. We weren't bad, but it just wasn't there for us like we wanted it to be."

Hall was "very happy" with the performance of his 4x400-meter relay team.

"I feel like if you have good 4x4's, you have a good team. So even though we have small numbers … if I can put a competitive 4x4 out there where we can score points, I feel like we're maximizing our potential with what we've got."

What's up next: Aggie track members are slated to be back in action April 30 through May 1 in Lubbock, Texas, at the Corky Crofoot Shootout hosted by Texas Tech University.
