WAXAHACHIE, Texas — Through Friday at the Sooner Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, presented by Digital Scoreboards, the Oklahoma Panhandle State women's team is in sixth place out of 11 teams with 36 points.
A trio of runner-up finishes have positioned the Aggies in the middle of the pack, 10 points clear of seventh-place College of the Ozarks. Host-Nelson University and Oklahoma City University are in first and second place with 80 and 72 points, respectively, going into Saturday.
OPSU's day started in the hammer throw, where
Brittney Carrasco delivered a mark of 38.62 meters to grab second place and give the Aggies eight points.
Avery Brown finished in the top five with a throw of 34.58 meters.
"I thought (Brittney) threw really, really well today," head coach
Cyrus Hall said. "She came out with a good attitude, her mental was right, and she was on point. … I'm really proud of her."
Elsewhere in the field events, Brown led the Aggies at 30.33 meters in the discus, and
Neo Trim came within inches of earning a point in the long jump, taking ninth place with a season-best and school-record mark of 4.53 meters.
Carolina Valenzuela and
Lillyan Gerow both ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where Valenzuela reset the school record for a third straight race and nearly pulled off a victory, coming in second. Valenzuela crossed in 12:04.25, while Gerow finished fifth at 12:57.40 as the duo combined to add 13 points to the Aggies' total.
"It wasn't great conditions for the distance runners; it was super hot, it was really, really humid out here, so it wasn't ideal conditions for them to run," Hall said. He also noted how well Valenzuela ran and how excited he is for her future as an Aggie.
The final runner-up showing for the Panhandle women came via its 4x100-meter relay team, which consisted of
Akia Bowens,
Paizlie Reyna-Mata,
Breyanna Kemp and
Ashlynn Perez. The group ran a season-best race of 48.06 seconds, comfortably ahead of Nelson's third-place finish.
Kemp rounded out the scoring for the Aggies by taking fifth place in the 400-meters at 58.51 seconds.
